Boris Island Airport Could Be Built In Thames Estuary, David Cameron Confirms

Boris Johnson's dream of constructing a major new airport in the Thames Estuary received a boost today, after David Cameron said the government would examine its feasibility as part of a wider aviation strategy.

Plans for a third runway at Heathrow in West London were shelved by the coalition when it came to power.

But speaking at Institution of Civil Engineers in London on Monday, the prime minister said he was "not blind to the need to increase airport capacity, particularly in the south-east".

"We are acting now to make the best use of existing capacity. Gatwick is emerging as a business airport for London, under a new owner competing with Heathrow," he said.

"But we need to retain our status as a key global hub for air travel. Not just a feeder route to bigger airports elsewhere, in Frankfurt, Amsterdam or Dubai.

"Yes, this will be controversial. We will need to take decisions for the long-term – and we will be bringing forward options in our aviation strategy which will include an examination of the pros and cons of a new airport in the Thames estuary."

Cameron's speech comes as Johnson gears up to take on Ken Livingstone to remain Mayor of London.

Transport secretary Justine Greening was a key campaigner against the expansion of Heathrow while in opposition but now has the job of managing the future of aviation in the Britain.

"The challenge is making sure we don’t just stay well-connected with markets in North America, Europe and more traditional economies we’ve traded with," she told Total Politics magazine.

"We’ve got to make we stay connected with new economies, new investment and new business and that’s the challenge. How can we make sure we make the best out of the capacity we have for aviation? They’re not easy questions to answer."

She added in an interview due to be published on Tuesday: "Alongside the draft aviation strategy, we will kick off a broader piece of work, looking at our hub airport status and how we can maintain that in the medium and long-term of our country."

Plans to build a new airport to the east of London faces stiff opposition from local MPs. Tory MP Tracy Crouch has slammed proposals for a so-called 'Boris Island' airport as a "tedious, unnecessary, expensive waste of taxpayer money".

The plans are also opposed by deputy prime minister Nick Clegg who has said he is "unpersuaded" of the need to build a new airport.

Speaking in January he said: "I'm totally un-persuaded by the evidence and think we should take a common-sense, hard-headed look at the facts. I don't think we should as a country decide to concrete over vast swathes of the Thames Estuary on a whim."

Ah; Of course, i forgot, London is the economy of the UK, in London we produce, design, process, develop and create and build everything in the country......so as long as everything is geared for London, then thats the UK sorted is it?

Logic surely dictates that if you wish more traffic to enter Londons airspace; then take some 2non business related" (thats holiday traffic to you and I) out of it first!

Step 1; Allow more International flights from regional airports, most of whom are actively seeking more long haul regional flights. This in turn secures and increases the local economy and a few million less cars from all over the UK converging on London, and a saving each of them at least £100 each time.

Step 2; Allow selected expansion of some regional airports or close down inadequate ones and construct new "Major" SW, NW and NE ones where dictated by the regions. This will create REGIONAL jobs and contracts that will impact far more on LOCAL economies than yet another London contract for London businesses that the rest of the UK will end up paying for......again.

All in all; we have NO long sighted, common sense plan for our airports and airspace (much as we dont for our train system)., but i offer my thoughts non the less.

Roy Fowler - they have Manston in Kent, Brize Norton in Oxfordshire - existing airports that could be used - plus Stanstead and Gatwick which vcan easily be expanded and have good transport links existing .

Firstly Boris Island is going to be fogged in regularly and second you are going to have aircraft landing in the water due to ingesting sea birds - and not all pilots are Solly Sollenberger - passengers are going to die .

Secondly new transport links would be required costing £ billions

Thirdly the airport would cost £50 billion at todays prices - and as none of these big projects ever come in on budget you can probably at least treble this figure - Manston and Brize Norton already exist - converting them for large scale commercial use would cost chicken fed by comparison .

And regionally a second runway at Birmingham , Manchster now has two and there is a huge airfield Elvington outside York with the longest runway in the UK - a B52 can roll to a stop without brakes that was what it was designed for - so no problem with regional airport expansion either .

Boris Island is a hugely expensive, inherently unsafe solution to a problem where the answers already exist - not to mention a sunken ammunition ship so dangerous it can't be touched - if a plane hit it Boris Island and half of the Thames Estuary would vanish in gigantic explosion

new airports , new roads, where are governments green policies, we are in a drought in the south east due to global warming, I cant understand why we dont consider internet conferencing for business meetings, and railways for moving heavy goods, bring back the green party.

we don't need another airport . . . and named after old boris . . yikes . . . I am sure the government could spend the money more wisely
