Toulouse Shooting: Suspect Mohammed Merah Dead

Mohammed Merah

Mohammed Merah, the suspect accused of killing four people at a Jewish school and three soldiers in south west France, has been found dead after a sustained gun battle with police.

Two police officers were injured, one seriously, in a daring raid on Merah's flat in Toulouse on Thursday, following a two-day siege.

Prosecutors said he was shot in the head by a police sniper as he attempted to flee the flat by jumping out of the window.

French interior minister Claude Gueant gave an extraordinary account of the raid, telling reporters that police found Merah hiding in the bathroom and that he started "shooting wildly" at police before leaping out of the window.

He was found dead with a weapon in his hand.

Gueant said police decided to go into the apartment at 10:30am: "The raid police decided to enter into the apartment, they entered through the front door first also by the windows.

"The shutters had been closed and the panes had been removed therefore the unit had entered aware of the danger and the threat. We sent in special cameras to be able to see where he was, but we could not locate him. It was when we were able to look into the bathroom that is where he came out the bathroom shooting madly at everybody.

"[The police] had never seen anything like this kind of violence, therefore the raid police had to protect themselves at the end. Mohammed Merah jumped out of the window with a weapon in his hand continuing to shoot all around him. He was found dead on the ground."

The 23-year-old student believed to be behind a series of shooting sprees was earlier quoted as saying he "wants to die with a gun in his hand" as police surrounded his flat.

Merah, who claimed to have links to an al-Qaeda fringe group, had earlier indicated he would surrender.

French police had been carrying out a series of explosions overnight to keep the suspect awake.

Merah, who is of Algerian extraction, was accused of opening fire at the Ozar Hartorah school on Monday, killing three children and a rabbi. He was said to be acting 'in revenge for Palestinian children' and has claimed to belong to a fringe group related to al-Qaeda.

Reuters had quoted the director of prisons in Khandahar, Afghanistan, who said Merah was arrested in 2007 but escaped en masse with other Taliban prisoners in 2008.

It was also reported that Merah had previously attempted to join the French military but was turned down because of his alleged criminal record.

Paris presecutor François Molins said that Merah was obsessed with watching graphic videos of beheadings and torture online, and said while he had trained at terrorist camps he did not have the "soul of a martyr" and was not prepared to die for his beliefs.

French commentator, Pierre Haski told the BBC's Newshour programme that "the mystery here is that he was found to have quite a good arsenal of weapons, war weapons, and given that he was under surveillance it's not clear how this could have escaped the attention of the authorities."

Heard interviews with people who knew him personally. Acted alone. No true ties with any group. Snapped & went schizo. Domestic causes

Yes, that's the line. Lone wolf. Not like us. He was different. Weird guy. I would never do that. What could he have been thinking? Besmirches the name of us all. Pleased I got that off my chest. I feel better now and can go back to what I was doing before this happened. And so it goes...

Question is tho, who supplied him with his weaponry? Haven't heard yet. Some one aided him, or not, but no one seemed to actually direct him.

Why don't the French employ the same policy in Calais and stop all the illegal migrants trying to get into the UK, to bleed us dry. Too easy an option just let them jump on another truck and it is somebody else's problem. Typical French attitude but at least they had the guts to blow away the so called terriorist in Toulouse.

this has nada to do with islamic believe, its just a sick nutta with the media to help him air his nonsense out.. call spade a spade, what we should really be worried about is the thousands of troops we bring back from war zone. when they will all kick in. then we will really have a problem, and dont get me wrong, they will, u cant convert a killing machine to a loving one. thats the only reason why the keep sending them back for mor tour of duties, hoping the really screwed up ones dont make it back, but they do some how and then they send them back again, top secret.

LOL! Jealous much? You have more loony-tune "jihadis-in-waiting" per capita than France does. Don't count your blessings too soon. Your country could be subject to a copy-cat of this crime in every major city - all performed on the same day. You might not be quite so dismissive then.

Terrible business
01:37 on 23/03/2012
You have hit the nail on the head...that is just what it is to the islamic radicals... business...the terror business which involves getting financial support from muslims all around the world in the name of support for the third world... their third world. They could not survive a day if it wasn't for terrorist states buying arms and supplying the death squads with training facillities etc. Iran needs to be wiped of the earth for more reasons than developing the nuclear bomb.

Moderate voices can dilute the influence of extremists if they understand the mechanics of social and religious indoctrination as explained in the YouTube video entitled, “Bikinis and Burqas: Narrowing the Gap.”

It's not a good thing he's died - it would have been better PR had he have been tried. It also would have allowed us to find out whether his AQ claims were as ridiculous as it appears they were.

We can't be certain he was a lone psycho, although it appears that way.

The Jewish kids, and the Muslim troops he killed, RIP.

Muslim man seeks out Jewish people to kill and this is not about religion?? That's a leap.

??? Again, there seems to be a misunderstanding.

It appears that you reply to posts with comments unrelated to the comment you're replying to. In this case, I didn't say anything within a million miles of what you seem to have made up.

The Gendarmes suggest he attacked muslim troops, following a common, oft repeated strategy (seen endlessly in WWI, WWII, the Balkans, NI, etc.) - making muslims feel distanced from serving in the army. He attacked troops, to make non-muslim troops feel unsafe, and to make a political point. For the Jewish kids, he sought out Jewish people for his political point about Palestine.

Again - this topic you've moved onto is completely distinct from the comment you replied to, so I'm rather puzzled by your post...

I think learning English should be a priority...and I don't mean for them...

Regardless, in the Al Mutallab situation, his father had repeatedly reported him to the authorities! Breivik's big enemy was his own father, yet you apparently in this case you have the knowledge required to believe in some medieval collective punishment?

Let's not get swept away in the excitement of a dramatic case. We should actually live by the rule of law.
