Mohammed Merah Toulouse Killings 'Had Nothing To Do With Islam' Sarkozy Says

Toulouse Shooting Nicolas Sarkozy

The Muslim faith has nothing to do with the terrorism France faced after a crazed gunman went on a series of shooting sprees, killing seven people, Nicolas Sarkozy has said.

Speaking just hours after it was confirmed that gunman Mohammed Merah had been killed in a gun battle following a 32-hour siege in Toulouse, the French president called for calm.

"The Islamic faith has nothing to do with the insane motivations of this man. Before deciding to target Jewish children he targeted other Muslims."

He added: "We cannot allow this kind of ideology of hate or terrorism to take over our country."

"France has shown their indignation and they did not allow their anger to take over," he said.

Merah was accused of killing three Muslim soldiers and four Jews, including three children, in separate incidents in the south west of France. The 23-year-old, who is of Algerian extraction, was said to be acting 'in revenge for Palestinian children' and has claimed to belong to a fringe group related to al-Qaeda.

The suspected gun man died on Thursday morning after a stand-off with police. France's interior minister Claude Gueant gave an extraordinary account of the raid, telling reporters that police found Merah hiding in the bathroom and that he started "shooting wildly" at police before leaping out of the window.

Sarkozy said they would now look into whether Merah was working with others.

"We will not allow this kind of ideology to affect us. I have spoke to the prime minister and other ministers, we've had a discussion about this.

"All those people who decide to visit internet sites that apologise or defend this kind of violence or terrorism, all those who go away to work and be indoctrinated in countries with this kind of ideology will also be punished. We will not allow people to refer to this kind of ideological thinking and they will be punished by the law," he said.

The French president said every step had been taken to ensure Merah was caught alive but "that was not possible."

Reuters had quoted the director of prisons in Khandahar, Afghanistan, who said Merah was arrested in 2007 but escaped en masse with other Taliban prisoners in 2008.

It was also reported that Merah had previously attempted to join the French military but was turned down because of his alleged criminal record.

Paris prosecutor François Molins said that Merah was obsessed with watching graphic videos of beheadings and torture online, and said while he had trained at terrorist camps he did not have the "soul of a martyr" and was not prepared to die for his beliefs.

French commentator, Pierre Haski told the BBC's Newshour programme that "the mystery here is that he was found to have quite a good arsenal of weapons, war weapons, and given that he was under surveillance it's not clear how this could have escaped the attention of the authorities."

Sarkozy is simply saying that Islam does not call for the killing of innocent civilians. And the texts written 1400 years ago in the context of tribal wars on the Arabian Peninsula have absolutely meaning to the vast majority of Muslims today.
Well, at least not to those who live in relatively modern circumstances in Europe or North Africa, but much less so for those who still live in utterly backward regions like in certain provinces of Pakistan, India, Afghanistan or Black Africa.
Sarko's comments will still not satisfy anyone, because French Muslims feel stigmatized by the actions of this fruitcake and the truth is that there is so much alienation among French youth of North African descent that some are inevitably tempted by the false glory of foreign holy warriors! We may see the same phenomenon in the US with so many convicts converting to a super radical form of Islam in US prisons!
Here is the uncomfortable truth, which will also satisfy neither liberals or conservatives. The French allowed too many North Africans to emigrate to that beautiful country and are now paying the very heavy price of non-assimilation. But the situation is not nearly as bad as that portrayed in the US media and not nearly as bad as the ghettos in American cities!
Sarkozy is in fact taking a middle ground by restricting the flow of new immigration while defending the rights, the position and legitimacy of legal immigrant families and their offspring!
But to my North African friends in France, you are right to defend your own cultural values and democratic rights in France but it is far past time you give up the links with your ancestors' home country and accept the values, traditions and social mores of YOUR country, with all its faults.
Above all, when people like Mohammad Merah claim to speak in your name and in the name of Islam, you need to fight them tooth and nail in your homes/families, in your work places and in the streets. You need to denounce them far and wide including to the police!!
As for the social alienation, no one can deny the suffering of your ancestors, but YOU can make thing happen through hard work at school and on the job. My boss is a French Arab as is my favorite fellow worker. Instead of listening to the self-righteous French left, "indigent-vous" against ALL the false prophets and seize the initiative in your personal lives!!

This is a very poor cover up Sarky, there are far too many lies being told by all politicians around Europe and the wider world, why do you all treat us like fools. Whatever name they operare under, relates to what you said it isn't, we all know differently. Even the media fear using the name they operate under, therefore, without saying it to avoid being deleted, we all know......

Sarkozy would say that, hoping to quell the tentions of the non muslim French people. If it had happened in the Britain C.ameron would probably say the same thing.

Hi there old son. It's not a question of upsetting anyone, although it is all to easy to do that, especially if you have a view on certain things. This time I said that having been shot in the head while still trying to kill infidels, he would be enjoying his wine and virgins about now. That was deleted, yet trolling through the posts others said similar things. If we are all going to have to be good and toe the PC line, there is no point in writing at all. AOL huffington are very high handed anyway. For example. I don't think thee and me live very far apart. So I e-mailed huffington to ask if you could be given my e-mail address/telephone number, without of course making it public. They have not answered. That is one reason why I refused to sign another contract, there are other reasons which would go over the 250 word limit.

I'm not convinced that it was not a religious thing... we are told he killed three moslem soldiers... are we talking about moslems in the French army? I'm guessing so. In which case, a fanatic could very easily see these moslem soldiers as traiters to Islam. Obviously I'm speculating here. But the fact that he killed several Jews and attacked a Jewish school, does seem significant to me.

If Islam means "peace," and he was acting on the complete antithesis of "peace," I think it is safe to say that his motives were completely irreligious.

All angry people are enjoying a state of temporary insanity and his lasted longer than most.

The Muslim faith has nothing to do with the terrorism , ok , but how he wants to explain that to the french people who vote massively for nationaliste party FN?
19:51 on 22/03/2012
if the guy doing the killing had not got involved in islam then the killings wouldn`t have happened, in the same way that if david koresh had never found christianity alot of people who are now dead would not be dead. would you vote for someone who can come out with a huge lie like that? the man was a muslim extrmist..thre are plenty more of them out there..that is why we have security services with long lists of suspects. it is a shocking indictment of european lefty liberal ideology that this mohammed merah was not sent to a guantanamo bay style prison when he was apprehended in afganastan but back to france to be let loose on the population. it would not surprise me if he was once spotted at finsbury park mosque although i am sure the BBC are trying to find a link to nick griffin.

What pray 5 times a day, getting up and down like i am taking a royal marine fitness test. I have arthritis and postural hypotension. I would be unconscious half the day, and the muslims would be trying to stick me in the ground before I wake up,not likely.

Typical European politician, excusing himself from any responsibility for the madness of mass immigration and paving the way for more now and in the future. Quite a familiar story really as nearly all politicians here in the UK are singing from the same Hymn sheet.
