Bringing Home The Bacon: Tenant Kept Pig In Council House (PICTURE)

Posted: 23/03/2012 14:21 Updated: 23/03/2012 14:22   PA

A council is attempting to trace a tenant who caused thousands of pounds of damage to a house after keeping a pig inside the property.

Housing staff from Derby County Council found the Gloucester Old Spot roaming around the bottom floor of the property in Kingsley Street, Sinfin, Derbyshire, when they went to evict the tenant following complaints from neighbours.

The carpets were muddied and covered in droppings, and rooms were so full of boxes of junk that officials could not get into them.

It is thought the pig had been kept at the house for a year.

Derby Homes, which is responsible for managing council houses in the city, said the cost of repairing the damage caused to the property would be between £10,000 to £15,000.

When housing officials and the RSPCA turned up to evict the tenant on March 15 after gaining an eviction notice from court, the tenant took the pig away.

Council officials are now trying to trace his whereabouts.

Maria Murphy, director of housing and customer service at Derby Homes, said: "This is a disgraceful waste of money, caused by a tenant who failed to show respect for this property or his tenancy agreement.

"On top of the repair costs there is the cost of the office time and legal proceedings in gaining possession of this property.

"The tenant removed the pig and therefore no action was taken by the RSPCA.

"We are trying to trace the whereabouts of the tenant and will pursue the costs of repairs required at the property.

"The individual will not be eligible for housing with Derby Homes in the future."

A few days ago a lot of people on here were complaining about terrible landlords and why is rent so high. One reason rent is so hig is now 1000 people will have to pay an extra £15 to repair this animals damage.

It's not the animal that is responsible for the damage, it's the two legged pig that brought it into the house. Hope they catch up with it soon. For preference it would be slaughtered and it's usable meat and offals sold into the petfood chain to help defray the Council's costs.

That was the animal I meant. Its not the first time I have seen excrement all over the walls of a house. sadly last time it was two "humans"

It is a reflection of the houses in the area, most are only fit for animal to live in

How do councils come up with such ridiculous over the top pricing, back pocket money again?.
11:04 AM on 03/24/2012
Most LA Councils have Private Sector manageging agents like Derby Homes who manage properties on behalf of the Council (none are directly run by councils anymore). It's these private sector agents like such as Derby Homes who are charging the Council such high prices for services. A proportion of council rents collected from council tenants includes a "management fee" which is paid to the managing agent. The vast majority of council tenants are unaware that Private Sector agencies run homes on behalf of Councils.

Dill I don't know anyone who has an asbo or binge drinks, with a tv crew capturing there every vomit, I have never met anyone who has starred on plod with vids or been on the shite kyle program, I have been to loads of binge drinking town centers and can truthfully say all i'v ever seen is 99% of the people out at the weekend enjoying themselves, there has always been odd people who treat there houses strangely, they normally need help not be hoisted up as a reason to attack everyone who lives in social housing, because shapp has a cunning plan.

i am on a years probation for council bungalow. have been told i haven't decorated every room in bungalow quickly enough. and have been told having things still unpacked i am not keeping it tidy and yet in my time i have visited council houses a bit like this and this was part of my job and no one came round to check that. as the other post said. i cracked walls and ceilings and told to fix structeral cracks due to building shifting. i can't afford to get a decorator in and have paint bought with grant. and have had rent put up and housing benefit cut and they are complaining about a pig. they should look at long term tenants. like this.

tiggielijahscat, it all depends on what you signed regarding your council tennacy agreement.
If you agreed to take the house in the order it was in then you don't have a leg to stand on unless it involves electrical, plumbing or structural work. It looks like you have a case against the council to repair the walls and ceilings as to paint over them will be a waste of time.
Go and talk to someone at the Citizen's Advice Beaurea.

Disgusting to live like that, i'm a council tenant and keep everything clean tidy have gardens to be proud of but, there is a big but plaster falling off the wall due to gutters needing attention (which was reported and noted 12 months ago), a boiler that turns the heating on by itself, hole in the bathroom wall filled with an old towel after workmen vanished into the night and a front door i can't open....£85.00 a week rent and a £5,000.00 loan to put right cause the council are SHIT!! Pissed off yeah you bet i am

check your tenancy agreement the section that says right to repair you will be surprised at what it says if repair is not done with in a reasonable time you write to council under the right to repair act then they have to give you a completion date if not done by then you have the right to get private contracters in and they bill the council or the council have to pay you between £20 and £50 per day until said repairs are done been there done it cost my local council £6,500 in compensation for a broken window do not let them fob you off it is the law and in the houseing act as far back as 1949 just been amended several times over the years i.e more things you can enforce on the right to repair .

To add to your post, treetontaxis, I own a house that used to be a council property and they ripped up my really nice privet hedge and erected flimsy fencing to the rear of all the houses around here regardless of whether they were council or privately owned. Many years later it has disintegrated, along with most of the other council properties fences. They said it was my responsibility to replace the fence until I pointed out that they were guilty of criminal damage by removing my hedge in the first place and that though I wasn't litigious in those days, I am now. The fence was replaced free of charge within a week.
It's always worth challenging the council, they don't want the cost of going to court over disputes, especially with someone who's as assertive as I am.
