Petrol Panic Sees Woman Suffer 40% Burns While Transferring Fuel In York Kitchen

Petrol

A woman was badly burned when petrol ignited as she transferred it between containers in her kitchen, a fire service said today.

The woman, named locally as Dianne Hill, was decanting fuel from one container to another in the house in York when it ignited and set fire to her clothing, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said.

She was taken to hospital with 40% burns to her body.

Two firefighters put out the fire and removed the remaining petrol. A fire service spokesman today warned people about storing petrol in their homes.

Peter Hudson, of North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: "Members of the public should take extreme care when handling and storing petrol and be aware of the risks associated with incorrect use and storage of fuel.

"In domestic situations fuel containers must not be stored in living accommodation such as kitchens, living rooms and bedrooms or under staircases.

"Any storage place should be well away from living areas and be secured to protect against the possibility of vandalism or arson."

He continued: "Never bring petrol inside your home. If you do smell petrol fumes in a garage or outbuilding ventilate the area and make sure nobody smokes or turns electrical switches on or off. The slightest spark could cause an explosion."

The woman was in her 40s and lived in the Acomb area of York, according to Mr Hudson.

The fuel she was decanting ignited as she was using the cooker at the time, he said.

She was attempting to transfer the petrol from one container to another using a jug.

Well it was coming wasn't it? Truckers on strike and no fuel. Cannot blame government because when we look Europe as a whole, think how people living there and job losses is beyond limit there. Here in UK more jobs would continue to be lost as time goes by. If Europe do not recovers, there would be trouble here in UK because export and production going down mean less out put so GDP would remain below government target. Government made one biggest mistake, immigration policy is so damaging, more and more cuts are on the way. Immigrants suppose to speak English so they could get jobs but instead of that government have to spend billions to educate them and while they are learing to speak, government have to produce leaflet in many languages. The area i live in, there are leaflets in almost over 20 languages. It was shame no English leaflet was found so it was very shameful experience i felt. Thinking is this UK or what? If government had handle immigration policy than we had more jobs in our hands and less recession because tax man had more in their account. The young people who were getting EMA and university students are in no education due to higher fees 4 times more high then 5 years ago. Government should work towards helping economy to get it recovers otherwise like in Europe, we may have protestors every where but can we blame them?

You can't legislate against complete imbeciles. At least she won't do it again

The panic and hysteria over possible strike action is absolute pathetic in the extreme, and to do what this woman did in york beggers belief!!, god knows what would happen if it involved food, there would be lootings, shootings, fights arson etc etc. I feel most of this has been instigated by the government to increase sales on fuel and vat, and we are gullible enough to be drawn into this conspiracy. calm down and wait and see, there is allways the number 10 bus, your legs or a bike, and of course the spirit of the blitz!. aso keep calm take a pill and wait until it passes.

She may not have had a lot of common sense going, but she really didn't deserve that. We've all done stupid things without thinking, but those kind of burns are just horrific. It makes my stomach churn just at the thought of the pain she must be in.

How is the Government in any way responsible for the crass stupidity of this woman?

I agree with you! I think GearoidOD is saying, 'but for' the Government's comments on/in the media there would be no panic buying and hoarding of petrol in jerrycans. However, it's not that simple. In law, and under the concept of duty of care, there is a test called the time and space test, therefore putting the Government totally in the clear. Moreover, people have to take responsibility for themselves. People know the dangers of fuel, so being in the know, they should take all the advice being given out over the media right now, that is don't panic buy, and don't hoard fuel in cans.

Putting a bit of petrol aside in a Jerry can is a sensible suggestion, however, he forgot how stupid the general public are and how they panic buy at the thought of the shops closing for a day. You can't legislate for idiots.

Who in their right mind thinks its a good idea to transfer petrol from one container to the next in a kitchen near the cooker. Obviously this lady didn`t realise that the vapour from petrol is highly combustible. I think that the media, the unions, politicians and people behaving like sheep in panic buying fuel. There appears to be very little common sense shown by all sides. as a result i not surprised something like this incident hasn`t happened earlier.

What's the story mourning Tories?
11:52 AM on 03/30/2012
Sad but not sympathetic. Brought on by moronic behaviour. I'll put the blame on the government because they orchestrated this situation by tugging on everyones stupid strings, but she wasn;t listening to much if she didn't get the very obvious 'things you already know' information from the fire brigade which were on TV warning about this very thing.

She was doing essentially what the idiot in Cameron's government told citizens to do, stock pile fuel. The fire service warned that this imbecilic advice would result in exactly this sort of accident.

Most of these people panic buying will have to do the same again next week, if the strike happens as they have to give 7 days notice. So their tanks would be empty by that time!
