Depression And Fast Food Link Confirmed

Fast Food
The link between the consumption of fast food and depression has been confirmed

Eating fast foods such as hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza and baked commercial goods like fairy cakes, croissants and doughnuts is linked directly to depression, it has been confirmed.

The study, headed by scientists from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of Granada, found that fast food consumers, compared to those who eat little or none, are 51% more likely to develop depression.

Published in the Public Health Nutrition journal, the results also found the more fast food consumed, the greater the risk of depression.

The study demonstrates that those participants who eat the most fast food and commercial baked goods are more likely to be single, less active and have poor dietary habits, which include eating less fruit, nuts, fish, vegetables and olive oil. Smoking and working more than 45 hours per week are other prevalent characteristics of this group.

Of commercial baked goods, Almudena Sánchez-Villegas, lead author of the study, said: "Even eating small quantities is linked to a significantly higher chance of developing depression,"

The study sample belonged to the SUN Project (University of Navarra Diet and Lifestyle Tracking Program). It consisted of 8,964 participants that had never been diagnosed with depression or taken antidepressants. They were assessed for an average of six months, and 493 were diagnosed with depression or started to take antidepressants.

This new data supports the results of the SUN project in 2011, which were published in the PLoS One journal.

The project recorded 657 new cases of depression out of the 12,059 people analysed over more than six months. A 42% increase in the risk associated with fast food was found, which is lower than that found in the current study.

Sánchez-Villegas concludes that "although more studies are necessary, the intake of this type of food should be controlled because of its implications on both health (obesity, cardiovascular diseases) and mental well-being."

Depression affects 121 million people worldwide. This figure makes it one of the main global causes of disability-adjusted life year. Further still, in countries with low and medium income it is the leading cause.

However, little is known about the role that diet plays in developing depressive disorders. Previous studies suggest that certain nutrients have a preventative role. These include group B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids and olive oil. Furthermore, a healthy diet such as that enjoyed in the Mediterranean has been linked to a lower risk of developing depression.

Sitting in front of a computer monitor for long periods of time has been thought to cause depression.
Housework, ironing and lack of sunlight does it for me :-(
I'm off for a salad...........but then, there's the left over Chinese takeway from yesterday............

"The study demonstrates that those participants who eat the most fast food .... are more likely to be single."
Surely it is more a case of people who are single are more likely to eat fast food. After all, cooking for one is fiddly, time consuming, and not alot of fun. Poor research.

Morgan Spurlock proved these findings in 'Supersize Me' years ago. Not just the physical well-being being severely effected, but mental also.

Perhaps these people are depresed because they are not educated, have a crappy job, smoke, work long hours etc. Not the other way around?

So one in 20 of the sample group developed a form of depression or started taking anti-depressants during or after the experiment - that means 19 out of 20 DIDN'T! I don't htink I'll be givng up my occasional doughnut with my coffee, or not having the odd burger or hot dog on the outputs of this study somehow.

Never touch the stuff. Trouble is people don't know how to cook today.

When I was young "fast food" was cutting a piece of bread and jam when you came home from food to satisfy you before "tea time".

Do they still teach children how to cook in school? I'm a bit out of touch.

Junk food is very convenient and it has a highly addictive element. Diet and exercise are linked to depression and an improvement in both help to control the symptoms. We are facing an epedemic of growing obesity which has massive health implications which affects physical well being so it must affect mental well being too. I am not at all surprised by the findings, but I also think that depression is the 'disease' of our times. The people in the study also worked long hours and were single, so if all you do is work, eat and sleep you are bound to be miserable.
We all need quality interaction and someone special.

And there are too many people claiming to be depressed when things simply did not go their way. i.e. "Cheryl Cole depressed because she broke a finger nail" or "Denise Welch depressed because of press attention" but failing to mention they have their health, looks, youth, are fairly fit, have a loving family and pots of money which most people do not have.

Im depressed, I can't afford well not afford but will not pay vat on me hot Pasty so I have given them up. Gone have the day when I would fill me car and go for a nice drive in the country, stop and have a roadside picnic eating me still warm pasty. I would enjoy at work having a fag drinking a beer out of a bottle and eating me pasty. I would get on the net and say what I was thinking but alass that is no more because I fear the midnight knock at the door by the brown shirts wearing their over sized jack boots. Thatchers rent a mob sorry I mean Cam-morrons rent a mob. Ah!! well me and the wife are going to live in Germany or China we are still do our resurch. But it does seem we will have more freedom in either of them no matter whitch one we do choose.

Yes, good luck trying to communicate in Germany or China when you can't even do it here.

Anybody remember the documentary "supersize me" with Morgan Spurlock a few years ago ? He proved beyond a shadow of a doubt what damage eating this muck does over a period of time.. Anyone who hasn't seen his film should dig it out and watch it..

What a load of baloney. When people are down or depressed they goto macdonalds or have a cake to cheer up. Stupid statistics. I am thinking they only asked people who habitually endulge meaning (ate all the pies) so they would be on the large side, Therefore depressed. For healthy people its a nice treat and does not depress at all.
11:48 AM on 04/03/2012
I was begining to think I was in the minority on this one ! . . . hmmmm. . . baloney
08:21 AM on 04/03/2012
Looking at all this junk food would make me depressed, eating it would make me sick.

I find reading such articles rather depressing.

Where are the scientific facts?
11:52 AM on 04/03/2012
it scientifically proven that pointless wastes of time and money like this are likely to have this effect ,( laboratory animals have been observed comiting scuicide on reading them )

whilst i have very close experience of depression and in no way would try to make light of a very seriouse illness 51 % in not proof plus single people working 45 hours plus are more prone to depression and also far more likely to eat fast food ( how mant people coming home alone afer working long hours look forward to cooking a healthy meal alone ? ) therfore this survey is toally inconclusive and if anything proves fast food limts depression as the catagories listed ( single/ long hours ) would probably be more prone to depression anyway
