Tim Farron Says Lib Dems Would 'Kill' Email And Internet Snooping Plan

Tim Farron Snooping Gchq

Liberal Democrat president Tim Farron has vowed the party would "kill" proposals for increased monitoring of emails and internet use if they were not watered down.

Mr Farron said he was "prepared" to look at draft legislation, dubbed a "snoopers charter", when it is published but warned he was "in no mood" to back "authoritarian" laws.

Many Lib Dems were "horrified" by the plans, which would allow Government listening post GCHQ to monitor internet traffic - times, dates, numbers and addresses - in real time.

Mr Farron told BBC 1's Andrew Marr Show: "I am prepared to recognise that there is obviously a need in modern society with new technology to have a look at what needs to be given to the security services but only if it is absolutely clear there is no universal access.

"But we are prepared to kill them, be absolutely clear about that, if it comes down to it.
"If we think this is a threat to a free and liberal society then there would be no question of unpicking them or compromising, this just simply must not happen."

The Government has faced an intense backlash over the plans, with senior Conservatives joining Lib Dems and civil rights campaigners in warning they would cause a gross intrusion into freedom and privacy.

Mr Farron said he would be "surprised" if the Bill ended up looking "anything like the press reports we have had this week".

He said: "My conversations with the Deputy Prime Minister and others reveal that there has been significant movement this week."

Mr Farron added: "It is important to be reasonable and look at the draft legislation, as it now will be, and see what it says and look at it on its own merit.

"But I have to say I'm in no mood whatsoever to apologise for, or to amend or unpick authoritarian legislation.

"It strikes me that a Government that includes Liberal Democrats should ensure that Britain ends up a more liberal place, not less."

Nick Clegg insisted earlier this week the Government was simply "updating the rules" to allow the police and security services "to go after terrorists and serious criminals" who are using the internet to communicate.

What's said today will be forgotten tomorrow.

What promises are made today will be forgotten tomorrow.

Whatever politicians say or do will be forgotten by next week..

"Senior Lib Dem threatens to block surveillance plans
Tim Farron warns he will not back authoritarian laws and says there has been movement on the plans this week"

I see that there is no comments section added to this Guardian article is there a reason . All that needs to be said is that the Lib Dems are Orange Tories who support every aspect of this administration and are using political posturing to try and win back support for the forth coming elections. The simple question that needs to be asked is if they disagree with there Tory masters Is why not withdraw support and call an election and save Ordinary working people Three years of Hardship and impoverishment. The answer is that the Orange book Tory Dems are in reality following the same agenda as the far right Conservative party. Anything other than complete withdrawal from this administration will be regarded as betrayal One single vote at the next election for the Orange Tories will be one to many for such a duplicitous party

Oh yes, the same way they killed the NHS Bill - NOT which they failed to even debate at their conference. Roll on the Local Elections, a feel the warm glow of revenge.

After every other broken promise from the Lib Dems I'll believe it when I see it. If they had a molecule of human decency they wouldn't be in government with David Cameron in the firrst place.

What makes Mr Farron think anybody gives a damm about what the Lib -Dems think. After the next election they will be dismissed to the history books where they belong. Can we have an early election and get rid of them this year.?

"Kill" is a bit strong for politicians, why don't you just hit it with your handbags?

Who in their right mind would listen the ConDems? They have lied to us about tuition fees, the NHS privitisation and so many other issues! The sooner people stop voting for them the better - they are just charlitans and liars

I have simply stopped paying any attention to the rhetoric offered up by any of the Lib/Dem party. I do so safe in the knowledge their brief soiree with power will end abruptly at the next election and they will fade back into the veil of obscurity from whence they came. All they have done thus far is to ride on the shirt tails of the Tories, hindering the passage of bills that are good for the country, promoting ideas that are bad for the country and selling their souls for the last vesige of continued power sharing by reneging on every promise they made pre-election. So why should I believe for one moment they will stop, or are able to stop, this insidious plan to invade the privacy of law abiding citizens of this country>

Reading the comments of an MI5 officer he sees no need for this as they are already able to do all of this - they simply need a warrant - and applications for warrants are never declined - all it will do is reduce the paperwork but have no affect whatsoever in survellience and information gathering .
As he described it It is simply like the police going to a crime scene with a fingerprint specialist but not a DNA specialist - it does not mean they don't collect any DNA - they simply have to ringh the DNA guy and tell him to get there just as they need to fil out a warrant to bug your phone e mails etc - its an admin problem - not a security problem

I seem to remember the Lib-Dems saying if they got into power they would do away with Student fees, looks like this another of their LIES. I for one don't beleve a word they say

Labour tried to get this snooping law through Parliament under instruction from their masters in the EU, the LibDems and Tories were vehemently opposed to it. Now the tables are turned with the LibDems leadership and Tories wanting to bring it in, again under instruction from the EU with of course Labour opposing along with this guy Tim Farron who's chickened out. If this does not prove that we are now no more than a client state of the EU, I don't what does. Strange isn't it, we went through 30 plus years of being bombed, killed and mutilated by the IRA and not once did the government even suggest they allow the security services to be able to snoop on everyone as this new law will allow. No this has nothing to do with our security, this has everything to do with the security of the government, the EU and their elite establishment cohorts. Its to protect them from us.
