A four-year-old boy who was found injured in the street is believed to have been stabbed, police have said.

The youngster, who has not been named, was rushed to the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham after he was found with serious injuries in Frederick Street, Mansfield, at about 1.30pm yesterday.

The boy's parents have been with him at the hospital, where he is conscious and stable.

A 51-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the assault and will be questioned by officers, a spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said.

He added: "We believe this is an isolated incident and we do not think any other parties are involved. We will be interviewing the man in custody later today.

"Specialist support is being provided for the boy and his family, while house-to-house inquiries and a full forensic examination of a property in Frederick Street will be carried out today."

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Oh lordi dont send him to the QMC, you come out worse than you went in. If you come out. I live not far away and while the area isn't exactly great, this is shocking stuff.

According to the Daily Mail, the father, who had only lived there for 7 weeks, left the boy with the neighbour, while he went to the corner shop. I would not have left my son, would any of you?

There is too much guessing going on.

James Bulger was only two when two other kids got him away from his mother. Let's wait please.

Sometimes I really think we're living in hell. Everyday is a constant barrage of murders and God knows what else. A constant reminder of how screwed-up this world is. Think I may turn into a buddhist monk and get away from all this chaos.God bless this child and wishing him a speedy recovery.

Before people start slagging the parents off, why don't we wait until all the facts care known.

It`s bad enough to hear that an adult has been stabbed but to learn that a 4yr old has been stabbed is absolutely horrific. What on earth is wrong with society?
We need to start thinking seriously about deterents for all crimes because we have none.
I hope the little chap makes a full recovery and wish him and his parents well.

Poor litte boy he is only 4 years old and someone stabbed him what is happening to our country. One cannot comment much because not a lot is known as yet. I do hope the poor little chap recovers and my heart goes out to his parents who must be frantic at this time.

What is this country comming to a 4yr old stabbed. My sympathy to the lad and family. Trust he recovers fully, without too many haunting memories. However a suspect is in custody pending questioning. Atotal strander or one known to the family? Time will tell,
