Sunday Paper Review

Every Sunday paper has their own take on the Charity Tax fiasco which appears to be engulfing George Osborne. The Sunday Times has the Tory party treasurer, Lord Fink, calling for it to be scrapped, but the big guns are really wheeled out in the Sunday Telegraph, where 46 philanthropists who give seriously large amounts of money to good causes every year turn their fire on the measure, which will come into force next April.

Both papers agree that the Charity Tax is unlikely to become a reality, with alternatives to it already being considered by the Treasury. But it's clearly something that the Lib Dems in the coalition are pushing for, in some form. Nick Clegg has, so far, been the whipping boy for the criticism.

He waxes lyrical about the cap on donations which can attract tax relief in The People, and the Observer reports that he's to conduct a whirlwind tour of charities in the coming days to explain why the tax is needed.

While the Charity Tax might have complex permutations another story in The People is much easier to understand. And it's funnier. The paper reports that the minister for water - yes there is one - has been caught flouting the hosepipe ban. Reporters caught the hose gushing water on Richard Benyon's "family estate", with Benyon's wife telling the paper she had "no idea why it was on".

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond might have hit the roof over the Economist's "Skintland" cover on Friday, but at least his own party coffers have been given a boost - a couple who won big on the Euromillions lottery have just given a major cash injection to the SNP, reports the Sunday Times. A millon pounds is always pretty handy, but particularly when you're about to wage a major air-war in the run up to the Scottish independence referendum.

The Mail on Sunday reports that Home Secretary Theresa May is to announce "neighbourhood courts" in the coming days - something the paper brands a "vigilante lite" measure to curb yobbish and anti-social behaviour. And it seems these new courts will actually have powers to fine people or compel them to repair the damage they've done. One immediate problem with that springs to mind - are the kids of people who engage in mindless destruction any good at DIY?

The Mail also reports on allegations that Defence Secretary Philip Hammond might have some "exotic" tax arrangements - transferring assets to his wife just before the 50p rate of tax came into force. As usual, nothing illegal about it, but it might be a thorny issue for David Cameron and George Osborne. They've said they're relaxed about ministerial tax returns being published - for the "very highest offices" in the government. Does defence secretary come into that ballpark?

Seems like there are a lot of confused people on here. The People haven't retracted their story at all!!! They are merely highlighting how uncoperative certain people were when they tried to find out the facts after discovering the hose on.

What I want to know is why Mr Benyon or his team didn't explain he was exempt from the water ban? Is it because he has his own private water supply? Embarrassment perhaps?

The fact Mr Benyon and his team didn't say they had their own private water supply - where he can extract around 17million gallons of water a year and doesn't have to comply by the water ban - says it all.

One rule for him and another for the rest of us.

The article stated they found the hose running when they got to the estate- they are still sticking with this so to me they have just reported the facts as far as they are concerned! Isn't that what a newspaper is there for?

They should start piping the water down from Scotland!
09:21 on 16/04/2012
look the hose pipe ban is like politics the product is there its how you are percieved to use it ,just get as many watering cans as you can get dont forget to claim for them on the expenses , fill them up from the tap and use them ,or if you are a minister buy a water water bowser fill it from the tap and there you go !

Do MPs not live in the same world as us. Do they have a special space for themselves. Why is he still there telling us what to do!!! Who do they think they are.
07:33 on 16/04/2012
Didn`t you know ? All MP`s are allowed to lie, cheat, steal, squander and use hosepipes at will, it`s company perks.
22:07 on 15/04/2012
So tell me, is there people who want to use a hose out there, not using it because they have been told their not allowed?? Lol lifes a bit short for that :)
21:07 on 15/04/2012
The hosepipe ban story has already been retracted by the People:

http://www.people.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/2012/04/15/we-apologise-for-slip-on-hosepipe-ban-story-102039-23825196/
20:48 on 15/04/2012
Of course it doesn't apply to ministers they don't live in our world. Prat.
20:34 on 15/04/2012
The main story was about a minister using a hose during the hose pipe ban, yet above there is just 3 lines about the hose pipe, gushing on I presume it's the minster’s premises. See below.
(Water minister 'caught flouting hosepipe ban') Now that was the headline in brackets on the main aol news website. Now mwatts said below that the water came from a bore hole, how do they know that? Unless they live beside the minister, as it doesn't mention it in the story anywhere, well on my news site or story.
21:49 on 15/04/2012
Well mwatts there is no where on my news stories where that link is ok? Below is the only link which I clicked and there was no other link so I don't know where you got that from. Not on my news I'll show you below the only link that was.

This site won't allow me to put a link to the article in the "People"... so if you google Richard Benyon Bore, links down there is a link saying how they've retracted the story.... old news
21:50 on 15/04/2012
Thank you I just got the link from you thank you again.
18:56 on 15/04/2012
I do find it funny that there are so many people calling for the MP's head when the actual story is that his water came from a private bore hole that he would be entitled to use whether he was an MP or not... never let the truth get in the way of a good story... apparently.

I have since read the information that it IS in fact a bore hole, so in any event he IS entitled to use it irrespective of a hosepipe ban.

Looks like 'The People' newspaper is actually publishing a non-event, without either researching OR is it a deliberate attempt to cause a problem? Unfortunately and as usual it appears to be the second.
21:13 on 15/04/2012
yes, I've tried posting a link to story abnout the retraction in the "People", but this site keeps on rejecting it.... it is old news now.

Water Minister Richard Benyon only has himself to blame for not following his collegue Francis Maude's advice and stockpiling water in jerry cans in his garage to prepare himself in advance.
17:42 on 15/04/2012
I do wish I could get the story that I clicked onand not something totally different this has happened twice. Whats up Huff
17:37 on 15/04/2012
I do wish the lower class people would mind thier own business, and let us more deserving people get on with our lives, I do wish David would hurry up and get a grip of the press and stop them printing unsavory news about us, I dont't care if its true, just who do they think they are.
David dear, what happened to that horse you rode last week.
18:12 on 15/04/2012
Be carefull what you wish for . I fear your wishes are not to far away.
11:43 on 16/04/2012
It's already here, but the public seem to be in a daydream and incapable of seeing the truth, most people under forty just don't seem to want to know.
It's all about the Money, Money, Money. and Me, me, me,me.
The rot is entwined throughout our society, from the top down.
Example, Clegg wants all M.Ps to publish their tax returns to show how good and squeaky clean they are, but his wife and relations should not be published!!!!!!!
Is he suggesting his wifes tax affairs are not as clean as they should be?
16:46 on 15/04/2012
The report says it's a funny story - I don't find it funny at all - too long have the 'powers that be' dictated to the rest of us what we must and must not do and then do what the heck they want to themselves, and they wonder why they are a laughing stock and why nobody has any respect for them - it's pathetic and I'm furious - if he isn't charged the £1,000 hosepipe ban fine I shall be even more furious.
ps. I have a good sense of humour but stuff like this isn't funny it's outrageous.

Cheers - I always used to quite laid back about life, but it's just getting more and more frustrating at the moment and, like many others, I'm sick of being told what to do and how and why I can do it while t'others do what they like.
It didn't used to be like this - this was always a free Country, if I was younger you wouldn't see me for dust !
keep smiling, as you say we shall need to or go under.

Alright, it's an embarrassment for the Minister for water Richard Benyon, but does anyone suppose that he or his wife does the watering of their shrubs? Most likely an employed gardener
who made a mistake and forgot to turn the outside tap off. So should we all call for this poor person to be sacked and dismissed forthwith?

Hands up, has no one subscribing to AOL ever made a mistake?

It really is time that we as a society stopped 'baying' for blood of those who may just be wealthier or earn more money than us, whether they be business people, wealthier by inheritance - or just extremely careful with their money!

I suppose I'm lucky, I have never felt envious or jealous of anyone. I spend within my means and do not feel embittered by anything or anyone - unless they 'willingly' do harm to others.
17:10 on 15/04/2012
Yup I have made mistakes, but if it was you or me we would be paying a fine.

If I mistakenly break the speed limit....I get fined.
If I mistakenly claim to much on my expenses....I get fined
If I mistakenly pay too little tax..........I get fined cos I'm not a millionaire
