Drought could last until Christmas, warn officials

Drought has been declared in a further 17 English counties, with the Environment Agency saying water shortages could last until Christmas or beyond.

Environmental experts said dry weather over the past few months had left some rivers in England exceptionally low and had now extended the country's "drought map" into the Midlands and the South West.

Water shortages are now being compared with the "great drought of 1976" where standpipes were installed in some British streets.

While Environment Agency officials stress that public water supplies are unlikely to be affected by the ongoing drought, they ar reiterating calls from consumers to combat the dry conditions by using scarce water wisely.

Warning of the prospect of the current drought stretching into 2013, Trevor Bishop, head of water resources at the Environment Agency, said: "A longer term drought, lasting until Christmas and perhaps beyond, now looks more likely.

"While we've had some welcome rain recently, the problem has not gone away, and we would urge everyone - right across the country - to use water wisely now, which will help to prevent more serious impacts next year."

The Agency, which is liaising with businesses, farmers and water companies to meet the challenges of a continued drought, had already declared drought zones in London, the South East, East Anglia and parts of Yorkshire.

Exceptionally dry conditions across the major part of England are the result of a lack of rainfall over the past two winters, which has left rivers and ground waters depleted.

A spokesman for the Environment Agency said: "While public water supplies in these areas are unlikely to be affected, the lack of rain is taking its toll on the environment and farmers - causing problems for wildlife, wetlands and crop production.

"The Environment Agency is urging businesses, water companies and consumers to all play their part by using water wisely, to help conserve precious water supplies."

In the Midlands the Environment Agency has rescued fish from the River Lathkill in Derbyshire after it dried up, and the Rivers Tern, Sow, Soar and Leadon reached their lowest ever recorded levels in March.

Meanwhile, rivers in the South West are also suffering and nationally important chalk streams, such as the Hampshire Avon and the Dorset Stour, which support rare trout and salmon species, are described as exceptionally low.

While rain over the spring and summer will help to water crops and gardens, it is unlikely to improve the underlying drought situation, according to experts.

It was hoped that a prolonged period of rainfall between October and March - known as the winter recharge period - would prevent widespread drought, but parts of England received less than 60% of the average winter rainfall, and water supplies have not been replenished.

Commenting on today's news, Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman said: "As more areas of the UK move into drought it is vital that we use less water to protect the public's water supply in the driest areas of the country.

"It is for everyone to share the responsibility to save water. We are asking everyone to help by using less water and starting now."

Experts are now hoping for a steady rainy winter in 2012/13 to restore rivers and groundwaters, but the Environment Agency is working with the water industry to put plans in place now to deal with the prospect of a third dry winter. Water companies are looking at where they may be able to get more water, options to share water across company boundaries and how they can reduce leakage further.

The Agency is urging all water users to save water now, to help prevent more serious shortages and environmental impacts next year.

The Environment Agency last week called on businesses to join householders in saving water, and is continuing to press water companies to demonstrate that they have stepped up their publicity campaigns to encourage people and businesses to conserve supplies.

Officials are also stepping up river monitoring and working to help farmers top up their storage reservoirs.

  • The new official drought zones are Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire and Gloucestershire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, parts of Hampshire, and most of Wiltshire

A lesson in business =if you sell a product to the public and you dont invest in the company you may get a shortfall, you could ask your customers not to use hosepipes, but what if they all turned around and said bbbbblox you would then have to spend money on putting in more reservoirs to cope with the demand like you should have done before the government decided to build another million houses in the countryside !

Francis Maude has just urged all water customers to fill up jerry cans with water. This will solve the problem.
04:46 PM on 04/16/2012
Since most Jerry - Can's recently would have had Petrol, or Diesel inside them, then where is the further additional CLEAN Water going to come from just to clean these Jerry - Can's out BEFORE they can be used as Drinking Water - Carriers???

Richard Benyon, MP, the multi-millionaire Tory Water Minister has shown the way. He was allegedly recently seen with a hose in operation on the large family estate, near Reading, despite the hosepipe ban. His defence was that 'someone else turned it on'. Evidently, hosepipe bans are like taxes, they apply to you and me but not to the rich and powerful.

Indeed.
It is about time the Rich learnt, that you can drink Water - but you can't eat Gold.

Only in Britain can we be completely surrounded by Sea - Water, along with a chronic shortage of Drinking - Water.
This sounds like those many same excuses as when our UK Railway System is delayed by the wrong type's of Snow, etc.

They probably do have the technology to turn sea water into drinking water but they make more money not doing it.

If the current Hose - Pipe Ban lasts until Christmas 2012, then when will 2013's Hose - Pipe Ban start.
Upon the 1st January, 2013 perhaps???

Surely its illegal to charge full price for something we cant fully use, its like buying 6 eggs and only being able to use 5 of them, not fair when they waste so much with poor water mains.

The UK Tax - System is stuff full of things many People pay for and NEVER use, i.e -
[1]. People pay to Educate other Peoples children, while having NO Children of the own.
[2]. We ALL Pay to resurface and repair Road's, even if we don't have any form of personal Transport.
[3]. We pay through our Council - Tax to keep Libraries Open, even if many of us don't use them.
[4]. We ALL Pay through our Taxes also to House both Migrant's, and Immigrant's ahead of our UK Born, and Breed Population.
[5]. We ALL Pay towards the mounting Cost of running both the UK Parliament, and MPs' Salaries even if we don't agree with what they ALL do for themselves, and ourselves alike.
[6]. We the General Public pay ever increasing Costs upon everyday Item's, just to see Banker's, CEO's of Private Companies get ever higher Bonuses, while the Share - Holders get larger Profit's.
Yes WE the UK General - Public are a dumb lot indeed.
Psss' - Lend us a Fiver.

Here we go again; "Experts say......." So we didn't get as much rain through October, November, December, etc. Didn't these "experts" say we were going to get a severe winter back then? Now we're supposedly looking at a prolonged dry spell.... Well, never mind stocking up on the bottled water along with stamps and petrol, I'm stocking up on pac-a-macs and laying a boat keel in the garage - suggest you do the same....

I'm not saying it hasn't been dry, but the track record of these experts, they couldn't tell you what the weather was like yesterday, let along tomorrow.

It's all well and good some of you having a pop at the Water companies for water prices etc but I very much doubt half of you realize that the companies themselves DO NOT set their own prices 100% of the time. I used to work for Wessex Water and I can categorically tell you the governing body Ofwat dictate to the water companies what they are allowed to charge each year based on government set targets.

If (like Wessex Water) a water company ranks highly and hits these targets then they are allowed to increase their prices as per Ofwat guidelines and obviously the opposite is true if they do not. Try reading up on a particular industry before you start blasting companies who generally do a pretty good job.

The Water Services Regulation Authority, or Ofwat, is the body responsible for economic regulation of the privatised water and sewerage industry in England and Wales.

Ofwat is primarily responsible for setting limits on the prices charged for water and sewerage services, taking into account proposed capital investment schemes (such as building new wastewater treatment works) and expected operational efficiency gains.

This was in direct response to water companies, maybe not Wessex Water, taking the pee (pun intended) in the way they were setting their prices over the previous decade.

Perhaps the water companys should stop selling our water IE bottled water , this must be taken before it reaches the underground streams ect, therefore reducing our supply, so I sujest one of the first things is stop taking it away before we are able to top up our supplies,in 1976 we did not export or sell so much bottled water,so this must affect our supply ,and as most is taken from the north, we have no chance in the south to top up our supplies
