Boy, 6, Scarred For Life After Rhodesian Ridgeback Dog Attack (PICTURES)

A six-year-old boy has been left scarred for life after he was attacked by a Rhodesian Ridgeback as he helped his mother bring in the washing.

Erfan Ali's face and hands were mauled in the attack, which took place in the garden of his family home in Cardiff, after the animal leaped over a 4ft fence and chased him into the house.

Eight months after the attack, Erfan, now seven, still suffers nightmares and struggles to sleep alone.

The little boy had 70 stitches and had to have skin grafts during a five-hour operation following the savage attack. He will have to have further surgery as he grows older.

His father Dilwar told Wales Online: “His scars will be there for the rest of his life. The scars are not just physical – Erfan cries at night, he doesn’t want to sleep alone and he feels safer in school because there are big gates and other children around him.

“He’s extremely scared of dogs but he doesn’t trust any animal, not even cats.

"He sees a psychologist every three weeks and he has medical check-ups every three months and is due to see a consultant in six months to see what further treatment and operations are needed.”

Mr Ali has since moved his family to a new address, but admits his son is still fearful as the attack happened indoors.

He is standing for Labour in Llandaff North in next month’s local elections and is campaigning to change the law.

The dog’s owner, Kevin Edward Large, has pleaded guilty to failing to control the animal, who has since been destroyed.

Large (below) has been warned he could face jail when he is sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court next month.

banning 'certain' breeds is not the answer - I am the owner of a 1 year old female Rhodesian Ridgeback who is one of the most well trained 12 month old dogs I know. This particular breed is not difficult to train, is renowned for being particularly placid in temperament, responsive to its owners and although large good with children, this being the case with our girl. I am a firm believer of the owners being to blame 99.9% of the time and in our case it was not difficult or particularly largely time consuming to train her. Not everybody likes small dogs, and I think it is wrong to assume that all owners or large breeds have them as protection, to use for fighting or as a mean to intimidate people. My Rhodesian Ridgeback is one of the softest dogs I know - don't get me wrong I am a firm believer that large breeds need to be trained & owners need to be able to control, my own girl was attacked by a rescue belgian shepherd as the owner did not have it on a lead or have it muzzled even though his dog had attacked more than 3 times previously. I cannot stand breed prejudice what is needed is more responsible owners & more police checks for dogs.

In the year to March 2011, 6,005 adults and children were admitted to hospitals in England after they were "bitten or struck by a dog", the fifth successive year-on-year increase. Six children and two adults have been killed since 2006. In London, where status or weapon dogs are a common sight and there appears to be an arms race to create ever more menacing hybrids, A&E admissions for young people with bite injuries have increased by 119% over five years.

when is the government going to do something about these breeds of dogs and others.Have we got to wait for someone to be killed. There are too many cases of attacks on children and adults,we cannot keep blaming the owners and killing the dogs, there are too many of them. Its about time we banned some breeds in this country, there are plenty of other breeds if people want pets. Can you imagine this person having a spaniel or a poodle.I was out walking the other day on a country path and the young adult had 3 of the bulls on a lead, gave them plenty of room i can tell you.

Why on earth do people have to have dogs like these, ridgebacks, staffs, rottweilers or any other breed of dog that has been bred for fighting. You never know if it will attack you or anybody else. A friend's totally trusted staff, that he had for four years, and a dog that he left his young children with attacked him without any previous sign or warning. He is so grateful that it attacked him and not his children. What's wrong with a breed that is noted for it's good temperament, there are plenty of them out there.

to stop the thugs harassing us ,threatening us, and breaking into our property, thats why ive a huge dog! i had a load of black lads threatening to kick my little dogs head in and rob my house ,,, they are nowhere to be seen now ive my neo mastiff!!
20:19 on 19/04/2012
I think it's sad that you feel you need a dog like this make you feel safe.
18:20 on 24/06/2012
I'm sorry but a dog isn't born bad- its down to training. I want a ridgeback some day but I currently have a pomeranianxchihuahua because they're easier to look after and don't require much training. Breed prejudice is ridiculous and ridgebacks are actually really good dogs- its never the dog's fault, but the owner's. You could not be more wrong about judging a dog's personality by its breed and I'm very sorry for the ignorance of people like yourself because most of these dogs are not bred for fighting, but to be great companions.

More than 100 victims of dog bites are admitted to hospital each week, a rise of 66 per cent in a decade.
Latest figures show that 5,221 people were treated during 2008-09 after dog attacks in England - up from 3,137 ten years earlier.
The total includes 1,250 children, including many babies and toddlers.

A despicable deed by the owner to allow such an obviously savage animal to be free.
16:08 on 19/04/2012
Agree, but it does not stop the attacks and it will not,the government has to change rules and regs on some breeds of dogs, you would think that this is easy to control and stop these vicious attacks on people.
