Charlotte Seddon recorded her battle with anorexia in her diary

The parents of a head girl who died following a four-year battle with anorexia have revealed the discovery of a diary documenting her all-consuming mental illness.

Charlotte Seddon kept a harrowing account of being trapped in a cycle of losing weight, repeated exercise and "purging herself", an inquest heard on Wednesday. The diary was only discovered after her death in November last year.

The talented 17-year-old, from Padiham in Lancashire, died suddenly after being released from The Priory clinic in Cheshire, where she had been receiving treatment for the debilitating illness.

At the time her father Stephen Seddon, an engineer, described his daughter's death as a "tragic loss".

"It was very sudden and such a shock. She loved every minute of her school life."

Charlotte, who had previously been head girl at Shuttleworth College, had achieved the best GCSE results in her year and hoped to attend Derby University.

Now, Stephen says the family has learned more about her condition through reading her diary.

Charlotte charted her weight loss, exercise binges and bouts of depression, leading her parents to urge other families to be aware of the signs in their own children.

Daniel, Charlotte's 23-year-old brother, said: "The condition she had meant that she believed herself that she was in control and she would give out those messages to her family. She was extremely knowledgeable about the condition and would know what to say."

When she finally agreed to be admitted into the Cheshire clinic in June last year, Charlotte became a mentor for younger patients there, telling them to eat and take medication.

The 17-year-old left a diary documenting her battle with anorexia.

But her encouragement for others hid the severity of her own condition. When Charlotte collapsed and died at her Burnley home, she weighed six stone and her heart had shrunk to 190 grammes, down from the usual 320.

"They are very good at hiding it," Charlotte's mother Corinne warned. "I would urge people to sit down and have family meals together.

"At the start you just go along with it because you do not want to upset them."

The coroner at the Burnely inquest recorded Charlotte had died suddenly after years of anorexia.

This post made me so sad. I lost a good friend to this disease back in 2006. A year prior to that she had gone into treatment and did really well after. She slowly put on weight and got up to around 93 pounds but the damage was done. She lost all of her teeth because of the vomiting, Hair had become very thin and became jaundice and died of liver failure at 33 years old. It was and is a disease that I can't wrap my head around. She was never overweight, she was active, funny and outwardly appeared the healthiest emotionally the rest of us. All of a sudden she disappeared before our very eyes. Very complex and misunderstood disease.

Off topic: what is a "head girl"?

If she was my daughter she would have been tied down each day untill the food was eaten and watched constantly to make sure it was kept down . I`m sure her parents now will blame themselves for the rest of their lives for not doing more.

Its not as easy as that if it was i'm sure most if not all would be cured !! youngsters are very cunning !!The parents should not blame themselves she was after all now 17 I'm sure they tried everything . I just hope the poor girl is at peace now :)

delboy246, you need to fully understand Anorexia to appreciate that your tactic would be more harmful than good. it's not a disease, it's a mental disorder that needs professional help. I suffered for 15 years and if someone had of tied me down and made me eat i think i would of ended my life, that's how much it takes control!!! I am recovered now thank god but your attitude is totally wrong in every way shape and form!

This silly girl has ended her life anyway, she was selfish. Her only thoughts were for her own vanity. I feel so sorry for her distraught parents.
I`m glad you are ok now but you still have the mindset of a sufferer.

It's such a horrible illness and to be honest I think its a case of having to be cruel to be kind. It's all in the mind and it's a case of re-wiring that mind. Cases vary so obviously there is no 1 solution, but I think we are too gentle with anorexics. It's a psychological condition that is cured by the right mental conditioning, and I think we will find in the future the solutions are simple and are right in front of us. On one hand I think we are making the issue seem more hard to cure and on the other hand we are creating overly complicated solutions which follow idealistic rules that leave a suffer with too many chances to subvert the therapy. We should see it as cancer and treat it just as agressivly.

I agree, there is way too much pressure on people and their looks.
Such a waste of a young life.
Condolencies to her family.

what is six stone? I am sorry the young lady did not get the help she needed to overcome her preoccupation with anorexia. Very sad for her family. At least they have her diary to understand what she felt and how she felt. May they not blame themselves and try to forgive and mend their wounds. If they have other children, please show support and love them totally. Talk, communicate about their feelings as a family. Often there are more than one in a family; so I recommend open dialogue.

A stone = 14 pounds, so she weighed 84 pounds.

So very sad, indeed. Perhaps anti depressants might have helped, if she would have taken them. Thank you for the definition, moesmama, faved.

Having lived and worked, at different times, with four young women suffering from anorexia, my own conclusion is that the cerebral hunger trigger switches off, and until someone works out how, biochemically, to restore the function, there will be no successful treatment. All four were basically shy although it was well hidden, and had experienced what they had retained as a traumatic event, which had gone unnoticed. Early signs were eating little or nothing at home, then bingeing while out, being sick afterwards. Subsequently food was thrown under the table, put quickly into a handbag, pushed onto another person's plate - all in the instants others weren't looking. Standing next to one of them in front of a mirror, they were unable to see that they were thin, and pointed out the parts of their body which were fat. Coercion MAY prevent the person from dying, but it won't cure them. The only one I saw close to death had transparent skin through which one could see body structure - and no-one could mistake that for a well person.

A lot of ppl believe it only if the person is stick thin. You can still be fat and have anorexia. Ppl only notice when all the weight has gone but the damage to them has long before started. Nobody loses the weight overnight, they starve them selves for a long time.

I'm glad you pointed that out. Someone very close to me suffered from Bulimia but the end result wasn't anorexia. She lost teeth, hair and her skin became an odd greyish colour but never achieved what this poor lass did. It does happen over a long period of time. The person I knew who had it had kidney problems later in life. Very tragic for anyone who goes through this.

One thing to look out for is if they start to only drink Coke Cola and eat if anything chocolate that is a very BIG sign of a problem !

This is aweful.

How can a woman who weighs 6 stone hide how emaciated she is? It doesn't matter how good she is at answering your questions, if she looks like she is a holocaust survivor - you need to take action! Parents in this situation need to realise that their child has a psychiatric illness, get them admitted to a hospital (against their will if need be - you can have them sectioned under the MHA) and get them started on intensive parenteral nutrition and psychotherapy.

Hampstead Heath parenting wont do in situations like this.

Sorry to hear that. Anorexia is 10 times more common in women than men - but it definitely can happen in men too.

Somehow get him to see a doctor and get him referred to psychiatric help and soon.
