A grenade from World War Two has detonated in a controlled explosion at a junior school in Surrey.
The explosive was discovered on Wednesday morning in the grounds of Burlington Junior School in New Malden, near Kingston. A bomb squad promptly arrived and carried out a controlled explosion to detonate the device, according to the local paper.
Headteacher Pip Utting said the gardener had found the grenade in a gardening are near the school's field.
"It is not something you expect to hear has been found when you start your day and hopefully it is something that is a one-off," she said.
"At no time were children in any danger as much of this took place before the school day.
"It was all over by 9.50am," she added.
The school, which teachers seven to 11-year-olds was deemed "outstanding" after their last Ofsted inspection in 2008, meaning they will not be subjected to any more routine inspections.
Kingston Police confirmed they sent an explosive team to the scene to deal with the discovery and ambulances were on hand, although no-one was hurt.
