Beetroot Could Protect Men From 'Bad Fats' In Burgers

Beetroot Burger

Scientists are on the lookout for men to eat burgers - so they can test the health benefits of beetroot.

Researchers at the University of Aberdeen think adding the root vegetable to the meaty treat could stop the body from absorbing "bad fats" found in processed food, which have been linked to cancer and heart disease.

The researchers have come up with a recipe for their own turkey and beetroot burger, and are looking for healthy men to try it out.

The study is part of a wider Scottish Government-funded project to investigate the potential health benefits of Scottish produce.

Volunteers will be asked to eat turkey burgers with and without beetroot, and monitored to see which compounds their bodies absorb when they eat the different burgers.

Research leader Professor Garry Duthie, of the university's Rowett Research Institute of Nutrition and Health, said: "Processed food forms a major and increasing part of our diet. Consumption of high-fat convenience foods in Scotland increases year by year.

"We are looking to identify if adding a vegetable extract to processed food can actually protect the body from absorbing the 'bad' fats which exist in these types of products.

"We believe that adding a vegetable extract such as beetroot, which contains antioxidant compounds, will stop the oxidation of fat in the gut, and prohibit the body from absorbing the bad fat.

"Beetroot may also have the added health benefit of lowering blood pressure."

However, Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City University, told HuffPost Lifestyle that new healthy products will not have much impact on our country's growing obesity crisis.

"The beetroot burger might be tasty and lovely to eat; it may even be low in fat and salt; it might even be a small portion. But one thing it won’t be is a ‘silver bullet’ to resolve the global and UK epidemic. That requires a system change not yet another new food product."

The scientists are looking for men between the ages of 21 and 60 for the four-day study at the Rowett Institute in Bucksburn, Aberdeenshire.

By bad fat in processed foods they mean Trans Fat which causes heart attacks, you should always add rosemary to meat as it stops acrylamides from forming which cause cancer. Put rosemary into your cooking oil. But if beetroot stops the bad fats in processed meats eg corned beef, with sulphides and trans, then it is good news. Add raw grated beetroot, or beetroot juice.

By "Bad Fats" do they mean polyunsaturated fats? Of course not. These idiots still think saturated fat is bad and we should all be eating polyunsaturated plant oils which are unstable, break down causing a flood of free radicals to damage blood vessels.

Three cheers for modern science.

Sounds good as Monsanto doesn't have anything to do with it.

As farmer offspring roots in Iowa, Colorado and Washington state...I use all blogs to pivot my opinions on Monsanto as they have destroyed the small corn/soy farmer but nobody on the right seems to use this fact in the media as of yet. Only this country is buckling to the Monsanto agenda..Poland and India have already sent them packing...btw, I voted for Obama in 08.

No amount of vegetables e.g. salad ingredients will make a beef burger less fatty, it is the burger ingredients that sre full of hidden fat that the problem, and most people will order a cheese burger with fries and have a milk shake and the hot fried fruit pies , that the problem. Then school kids buying the fried chicken and chips at the end of the school day. It has been tried to have healthy menus on the school canteen menus but the kids won't take them, and parents send their kids with packed lunches filled with chocolate bars and crisps, when Jamie Oliver did that healthy eating in school meals programme the parent went to the local fish and chip shops and were hading their kids the full of fat food through the school railings, so no we can't do anything about healthy eating in this world of fried chicken chops and all the fast burger bar take a ways that has cropped up all over this country.

Why only men for this study? The article says

"Researchers at the University of Aberdeen think adding the root vegetable to the meaty treat could stop the body from absorbing "bad fats" found in processed food, which have been linked to cancer and heart disease"
Well, women get cancer and heart disease too, my friend recently died from cancer, it seems slightly odd that they only asked for male volunteers.

Having said that l have to say l often eat beetroot because l feel it`s good for me, l didn`t know why but the body always knows.

interesting. I recently had pneumonia and as I was on the road to recovery I had such a yearning for vegetables, which I normally only eat in nominal amounts.

Exactly my point, we don`t always know, consciously, but our bodies will find ways to let us know, there was a book a while back called " body wisdom" maybe you could do some searces for it, and similar online, l bet there`s loads of information on that subject
