Fuel Tankers Strike: Union Talks Set To Resume

Fuel Tankers

Talks aimed at resolving a dispute involving fuel tanker drivers will resume tomorrow in a bid to avert strikes.

Leaders of the Unite union will meet officials from six distribution companies under the chairmanship of the conciliation service Acas.

Unite has been given an extension to Tuesday before it has to make a decision about calling industrial action.

The two sides have already held six days of talks, but tanker drivers' representatives overwhelmingly turned down a proposed agreement last week despite progress being made on some of the issues involved in the row.

The new talks will involve Hoyer, even though Unite is to re-ballot its members at the firm after the union discovered that a number of its members had not received ballot papers during the original voting last month.

Unite represents around 530 drivers at Hoyer, one of the biggest distribution firms, which delivers fuel to Esso and Shell garages.

The Hoyer workers, who voted 59.7% in favour of strikes in a turnout of almost 80% in the previous ballot, will vote again, from April 26 to May 8.

Unite's assistant general secretary, Diana Holland said: "We remain committed to reaching a negotiated settlement with Hoyer and the other employers that brings stability and security to the supply of a vital commodity

"It has come to our attention that a number of people did not receive ballot papers. This is a concern because we believe that everyone should have a say. We will be seeking a fresh mandate from our members in Hoyer who like all tanker drivers face a race to the bottom in an increasingly fragmented industry."

The union has appealed to motorists not to panic-buy petrol, pointing out that no strikes have been set.

After the row flared last month the Government advised motorists to top up their cars with petrol and to store fuel in jerry cans, leading to panic buying and shortages of supplies.

There were chaotic scenes at garages as long queues built up, leading to criticism of the Government for the way they handled the dispute.

Despite the rejection of the deal by drivers' leaders, progress was made on a number of issues including pensions, health and safety and training.

Well, it will give the union officials something to do to earn their £100,000 per annum. What do they do for it the rest of the year?

DO NOT use commercial filling stations if possible go to supermarket filling stations, as far as I am aware they do not get supplies from same company as Shell & Esso, so everybody apart from the poor (not) tanker drivers we will all be better off.

THESE DRIVERS ARE NOT POORLY PAID , AND THERE UNION REPS, ARE WELL OVER PAID.

they need to threaten to strike during the olympics, they will get what ever they want then, as long as a fuel shortage does not affect mp's or royalty, the rest of us can get on with it.

Instead of a panic buy- why not all stop buying fuel.
That way the tanker drivers would have nothing to do and nothing to strike about.
And I wouldn't have to queue either- Or is that just a bit selfish!

Great Idea

And the Price will fall as there will be an over supply in Fuel and they will need to shift it

I was only being selfish. (filled up yesterday just in case)
Will that start a panic?

the inconvenient flaw in your suggestion is that it would work for about three days... then everyone would go out and fill up again; so not selfish at all, merely reality biting a bit harder.

They (The drivers) did that last time- All filled up and then sales were down for a week!
Just think of the reduction in overheads and potential savings on cost if petrol stations were only open at weekends!

Does anyone know where the shortest petrol pump queue is at the moment?
07:14 PM on 04/22/2012
Yes theirs one that`s run out of petrol and I can not see any queues there.
