English Need A National Anthem Of Their Own, Says John Cruddas

Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 25/04/2012 14:30 Updated: 25/04/2012 14:49

Labour MP Jon Cruddas is throwing his support behind a campaign that calls for England to have its own national anthem.

Those backing the idea worry that while Wales and Scotland have their own national anthems - sung at rugby and football matches in particular - England lacks a distinctive anthem of its own.

Cruddas believes those on the left of politics need to seize the initiative and come up with some ideas for one.

He tells HuffPost he likes "Jerusalem" because it "gets him going", but says he doesn't want to get too involved in what the anthem should be. His main concern is that while Tories have talked a lot about recapturing English patriotism, left-wing politicians haven't got on board with the idea.

"The point is about recognition of the issue," he tells us. "It does seem a bit odd that there's no equivalent to "Flower of Scotland."

Tell us - Apart from "Jerusalem" and "Land of Hope And Glory", what other candidates for an English national anthem are there?

The Labour MP - once tipped as a possible leader of the party - has long been concerned that definitions of Englishness are at risk of being hijacked by the far-right.

"It's part of the broader issue of whether we're going to have a shrill, sour, form of english nationhood based on resentment and loss, or if we're going to build a new positive English nationhood, within a federal United Kingdom," he says.

"The one thing is missing is an identity for England and the anthem itself is part of what we want to take on."

Cruddas believes it's time for those on the left of politics to accept that there's nothing wrong with English patriotism:

"The left has always been more resistant than anyone, they see patriotism as a form of homogenous white english identity, well that's not the case, secondly they see it as jingoistic. I don't think so, I think you could look at a different history of England - from Orwell to the independent Labour party, which has always attempted to contest a romantic notion of what England could mean.

"I accept a lot of people on the left find this alien territory, but I don't see an option, because of worries about the notion of what English identity is, if it's left to those who want it to become a politics of anger."

England have a National Anthem, it's God Save the Queen. That's why Jerusalem was played when Britain won anything at the Commonwealth Games

Another gimmic revelation in attempt to win back any popularity he may have had, or not, the latter allegedly. The people of Britain, know exactly what they want, we have enough National songs and music to revive our flagging spirits. What we don't have is, honesty or integrity from the Predictable 3, who all continue on with lies and deception towards the Nation. They don't listen to us regarding being freed from the manacles of Europe, they all promise referendums then renege on them. Let UKIP in they will show you how to free the Nation from the disastrous EU. Stand back and let them have a go, then we will; witness for ourselves how promises can be delivered or broken, after all, we have heard it all before......

God Save the Queen is not an official UK national anthem. There isn't one. It is a royalist anthem. We need a new, official UK anthem we can all identify with - no mention of monarchy, gods and empires.

Let's all jump on the Nationalistic bandwagon that is gathering momentum throughout the land, typical New Labour opportunism, look at something trivial to divert the attention of the masses from the huge problem of uncontrolled immigration and subsequent stress on the infrastructure and resources of this fair land.
What is Labours policy on immigration? Is it just like their other policies? Non-existent?

It's not a Union anthem, it's a royalist anthem. There is no official UK anthem: only an Act of Parliament or a Royal Decree can make it official. Only Royalists sing this.

It is difficult when God save the Queen is played at an England v Scotland game yet the Scots are supposed to somehow forget the connotations of being the English anthem and cheer the same anthem as part of "Britain".

A separate English anthem has been needed for a long time, but as long as England and Britain was deemed to be virtually the same thing then it did not matter.

If the English team had to stand to Flower of Scotland when Briain wins a medal they might realise the stupidity of the current arrangement.

We have an English national anthem, 'Land of Hope and Glory' what we now want is an English parliament, or does self determination only apply to everyone else?
01:04 AM on 04/26/2012
"There'll always be an England" may be appropriate.
