maybe there,s room to compromise . The catholic church could surely accept the marriage of a homosextual man to a homosextual woman they would of course have to accept how that marriage was consumated

It comes to something when the great religions of the world feel they have to come together against homosexuality. If something is so ok as some would have us believe, why such intense condemnation and opposition to it.

It comes to something when the great religions of the world feel they have to come together to restrict other peoples choices rather then coming together against rape, poverty, racism, aids, etc It's nice to know where their priorities are.

I thought they did that already, it is homosexuality it seems they have a major problem with, wonder why ?

they are already together against rape, poverty, racism, aids, etc, and now they have added another one to the list, have not seen any reference as yet to which they have prioritised. Afraid you will just have accept that the masses do not share your views, of which you are entitled to, as is everyone else!

I am with you on this cat and who would have thought that this is what has to be done.

As Islam is utterly opposed to homosexuality, this alliance would certainly knock gay marriage on the head.
06:34 PM on 04/28/2012
Well let's hope it does because I can see what Gays are after, if/when this law is passed and Gays will be able to get married in Civil ceremonies, they will then want to get married in our Churches and that would be against my Christian beliefs.

I have some sympathy with gay people, who I view as just not being wired right. Religions and religious leaders are another matter entirely, they are like the politicians who most people find contemptible.

The main stumpling point is that Jesus said that marriage is for a man and a woman not two people of the same sex also, that's what us Christians are basing this on. Now I await the barrage of insults against my posts like I have had recently on this subject, but this is my belief and nobody but nobody should even attempt to over-rule that.

Marriage predates Jesus by thousands of years.

And I am no christian. Why should I be forced to comply with YOUR faith? Given that the change in the law is about the secular civil law of the land and has nothing to do with the ceremony - which is a frippery that is only of meaning to the participants.

It will fail.

When the only argument against granting all citizens equal standing under the civil law is "my imaginary supernatural creature of choice says so" then failure is inevitable.

If there is a god it would be correct to call god supernatural and his followers natural, then there is the non-believers who could also be classed as somewhat natural. Natural is not a term that can be used to describe the gay community.
Equality is the right of all citizens of the same moral standings, if you choose to be anything less that is your right, you have to live with it and not try to bring your betters down to your level.

The argument is about morality and normality fighting against immorality and the abnormal. You do seem to have a great fear of religion, in your case rightly so!
Once you are overcome with fear, then you and the rest of the gay community have no hope of overcoming those with right on their side. Morality may have to struggle with lesser beings but will always overcome in the end.

.......A lot of powerful comments on this thread already . Gay 'marriage' has been around for some time. Why start questioning it now ? It will always be contentious , it will continue to happen . I feel it is yet another example of 'muscular christianity' , and in the general scheme of things should take a different position in the 'pecking order' of priorities , when Christians are looking to the Church for guidance and all they can see are (as already mentioned) the sexual and physical abuse of children by 'men of God' , the refusal of the Vatican to allow priests to marry , without them having to relinquish their vows first . Would it not be better for an inter-faith Union to direct it's energies towards religious intolerance , bigotry, racial discrimination , war , and yes - maybe even make some mention of the abhorrent idea of having intercourse with dead women ?
While maintaining my faith in the church - spiritual , I fear I have lost my faith in the church - temporal . I also feel I may not be the only one .

Has been around for sometime ?? As is hundred years or a few years like say 15 ???..I stopped reading your post after that statement....
04:39 PM on 04/28/2012
...more than 1 year but not as much as a hundred ? This is why I said 'some' time, as I don't know the exact amount . Whether or not you choose to read my post is entirely up to you .......

Love your name victormeldrew.

Gays achieved what they wanted about 7 years ago ie Civil Partnerships, but that isn't enough for them even though financially and legally it means exactly the same as married people, but now they want to have the words Civil Partnerships replaced with Marriage and want this because they don't feel equal, but I was under the impression that when these Civil Partnerships were allowed in our law in this country that is what they got.

I can also see that if/when this law is granted the next thing will be that they will want to get married in our churches and being a Christian sorry it is abhorent to me. I have rights also and this would be totally wrong if they are allowed to marry in our churches.

Think I had better mention that I am NOT against Gays and I know many have their own problems and I wish them well but I don't want Gay Marriages in my church as it's against my religion.

Daisymay

lets assume that the law has now changed so that protestants can get married, but catholics can only get a civil partnership. Both are equal in the eyes of the law. Are you happy?

Thought not.

Now do you understand?

What this illustrates is that this is not about religious doctrine but about religious power - the power of religious groups to dictate to the community how it should behave regardless of religious persuasion.

Over the last few centuries religions have progressively lost the power to dictate behaviour and at each point they have opposed change. For the Judeo-Christian world this has often meant resistence to changes in sexual behaviour. Gay marriage is the latest attempt to hang on to that power.

Doctrinally, if gay marriage is banned, religion will gain nothing. If gay marriage is accepted, religion will lose nothing. Either way life will go on as before, unchanged. What they will lose in the latter case is a little more dominion over the communities behaviour. That is what they fight against.

Not religious in any form. but I applaude anyone with the strength to standup for keeping up our standards of morals
06:48 PM on 04/28/2012
You are missing the point Mac it is against our Christian belief if Gays eventually wish to get the law changed so they can get married in our Churches which is what I suspect is at the bottom of this and I for one would definately be against Gay marriages in churches as it is against Christian beliefs. That is what the change will be to Christians.

Funny how these religious bullies spent years berating gay people for their supposedly "promiscuous" lifestyles, yet now they want to stop gay couples settling down and committing to each other! As a secular humanist, I've always thought you should judge a relationship by the quality of that relationship, not its gender composition - clearly, there are good and bad relationships on either side of the gay/ straight divide. The time to enact marriage equality is now.

To pacify Gays over the years religions have soften their approach to them but this really takes the biscuit when Gays now want to get married and I can clearly see what they are after - getting married in our churches etc, after the law to get "married" is granted and as a Christian it is against my beliefs and nobody should prevent that no matter who they are.
07:51 AM on 04/29/2012
As a Christian, DaisyMay123, you are entitled to your prejudiced beliefs. However, you are not entitled to tell others who don't share your prejudices or religious faith what they can and cannot do. It may surprise you to know that, in antiquity, the Christian Church did sometimes marry two people of the same sex, while in modern day Britain, a majority of Christians hold rather more progressive beliefs than you do.
