Ched Evans Applause: Rumours That Fans Would Clap Convicted Rapist Prove Unfounded

Fans of Ched Evans plan to applaud at the match

Rumours that fans of former Sheffield United striker Ched Evans would applaud the convicted rapist during Saturday's match proved unfounded.

Those sympathising with the convicted rapist said they would clap for 60 seconds during the 9th and 35th minute of the match, in recognition of the 35 goals he scored during the season and as a salute to his number nine shirt.

Ched Evans was jailed for five years in March, after his teenage victim was deemed "too drunk to consent" to sex with the footballer. In court, the jury heard how the incident was filmed by two other men watching the attack.

Facebook group 'Securing an immediate retrial for Ched Evans', which over 4000 people have 'liked' has urged fans to applaud the rapist, saying "He will be watching the game so please clap and show your support for an innocent man."

Applause at matches is usually reserved as a tribute for players who are suffering from severe illness or who have recently passed away.

Now applauding a recently deceased member of the game on the minute of the number they wore on their shirt is regarded as customary. Most recently, Aston Villa midfielder Stiliyan Petrov, who was diagnosed with leukaemia in March, was given a minute's applause by Villa fans during their home match with Chelsea in the 19th minute - in tribute to his squad number.

The Sheffield United match against Stevenage at Bramall Lane ground kicks off at 5.20pm. If the applause had gone ahead it would have been a damning inditement for Blades supporters, after Evans' fans used Twitter to reveal the name of the victim.

Any Sheffield United fans that applaud convicted rapist Ched Evans today should be ashamed. Thought better of the club.

The anonymity of rape victims is protected by law and revealing someone's identity carries a fine of £5000. However after Evans's sentencing, Twitter users employed the hashtag #justiceforched to abuse and identifying the victim.

At one point her name was trending, after fans of Evans unleashed a volley of abuse on the social networking site.

The issue was compounded when Sky news channel accidentally published the woman's name as well, after it broadcast an image of Twitter users discussing the case.

Ched Evans, former Sheffield United Striker was jailed for five years

Fiona Elvines, from the Rape Crisis Centre South London, condemned the individuals who had revealed the victim's name, saying that it was "really, really worrying that people aren't taking this seriously."

"This happened while the woman in question was recovering not just from the rape, but from the difficulty of the trial, which survivors of rape often call a second form of abuse.

"[The comments on Twitter] are creating a cycle where survivors of rape are being blamed. The CPS need to send a really strong message out, that you can't just break the law because you think you are supporting your football club."

North Wales police arrested three people last week, and whilst those individuals have been released on bail, Detective Chief Inspector Steve Williams, who is leading the investigation into the 'naming' on the micro-blogging site, warned that there will be "further arrests".

"Further arrests are planned and will be made in the forthcoming days," said Williams.

Evans' girlfriend Natasha Massey is standing by the Welsh international player, and has kept a picture of the couple sharing a meal as her twitter picture.

This guy's girlfriend is standing by him?!

'Sorry darling, I took a drunk and possibly drugged girl back to my hotel and raped her while my friends taped it, hope that's cool and we can still build a future after my jail time'...

We all know football fans are not the brightest in the world. But to applaud a rapist is a disgrace.

Who are these people who would applaud a rapist?

The only comparison is, I suppose that they would have worked at places loke Dachau, Belson Auschwitz and other such places, since they appear completely unable to differentiate right from wrong.
Truly shocking

adowilliams - people are entiltled to an opinion and as it happens lots of people (male and female) think that there is something very odd about this conviction. That doesn't mean that they should be applauding the guy at matches however if they choose to do this, it certainly does not make them Nazis either, you complete prat. In fact your comparison is probably the most ridiculous thing I have ever read, anywhere, even online.

I think I will bookmark your comment just to show my kids how stupid people really can be.

Do you work for the Daily Mail by any chance?

I wasn't surprised by the reaction. A lot of people are angry by what gets defined as rape. I won't defend this guy, but 'rape' certainly a crude and inaccurate unbrella term for many different situations and perhaps the law should be more precise and come up with some new terms.

I think @ben it is pretty simple - when a woman (or man) says no or is not in a fit state through drink / drugs / consciousness to prevent the violation of her body is pretty clear. If the perpetrator carries on regardless ignoring either of the previous 3 conditions then he / she has commited rape. The law is pretty clear on it as this shortcut shows

Why would a man with so much to lose get in a cab with his brother and another, blag his way into the hotel and have a spare room key cut, rape a 19year old in no fit state to say no and leave through a fire exit? Why would his brother film it through the window? What sort of monsters are they? Why would his girlfriend and wealthy family support such a monster? Even if he is found not guilty on appeal who would want to be associated with such a "man"? Would the apologists be as keen if it had been their sister / daughter vilified? He had it all and in the usual (minority) footballer knuckle dragging mentality he lost it all. I cannot muster one ounce of sympathy for him or his situation.

I dont disagree with you at all, in fact I've overloaded on vitriole and come down to pragmatism. My views of Football footballers and chavanistic male behaviour are grim! I'm just saying I'm not surprised at peoples reactions, because rape is generally understood as being one thing and that picture people have is so bad it clearly shouldn't be applied liberally. What Ched did was wrong, but is he up there with the likes of Catholic priests, Fritzel or a memeber of a rape gang? Probably not, and his sentence obviously reflect that, but does the label?
07:26 PM on 04/28/2012
I agree (with both of your posts here in fact). I'm stunned at how the victim has been treated in some quarters. I hope that in time, she can recover to a point where she can get on with her life. This must all be horrific for her. I have absolutely no sympathy for the perpetrator either. The fact that some women are also coming out in support for him is baffling and depressing. 'The law should be more precise'? A 19 year old too drunk to consent? Exactly what is confusing about that? Are people's moral compasses so messed up these days that they cannot understand when something is fundamentally wrong?

What other terms where you thinking off, attacking a girl and having sex with her with out her consent is rape, having sex with a girl that is unable to stop you is rape and having sex with a girl to drunk to even know whats going on is rape, it's not rape when a girl wants to have sex and consents.

Well cynicism aside basically yes, because in practice the law does take the situation into account other rapists have got far bigger sentences than Cheds. But in the public eye all situations have one term and one punishment. Rape is a umbrella term and it makes some people uneasy, paranoid or angry, and like with 'Dyslexia' or 'Autism' critics will use these general terms as a point of attack. Its another case of giving the lamen a bit more detail and precision in the hopes of preventing such nonsense. Education! Education! Education!

Strange how if you visit the FB page any negative comments are removed instantly and you are bombarded with hate messages on your own FB page. The support for a convicted rapist is incredible. £20k a week, a girlfriend who's parents are multi millionaires, on the cusp of a reported £10m move to a premier league club and Ched Evans really thinks he can do whatever he likes to anyone such was his ego and disrespect for what he had and now he has lost it all none of it was his fault. The open remarks for his victim naming her constantly is also sickening. I am aware some women do cry rape but until the law on anonimity is changed that is the law of the land and applauding a convicted rapist, naming him in the league 1 team of the year and the defence of it by Gordon Taylor of the PFA , I find truly vile. What sort of a message is being sent to women who are considering reporting sexual assault / rape?? Strangely, a massive amount of the posters on FB are females supporting this piece of scum.
