Sunday Paper Review 29 April 2012

The Huffington Post UK  |  By Posted: 29/04/2012 09:00 Updated: 29/04/2012 10:21

If you're a Tory, the one good thing you can say about the Sunday papers is there aren't any devastating allegations which might make David Cameron or Jeremy Hunt's job even more difficult. If you're not a Tory, you'll probably be disappointed about that.

Despite this there's an awful lot for Tories to be worried about in the papers, which all cover the latest pretty shocking poll numbers. The Sunday Express focuses on how 82% of people think the Conservative party is out of touch, based on the findings of its own poll. It highlights the comments by disenchanted Tory MP Nadie Dorries earlier this week, but buries a more interesting figure, which is that Ed Miliband and David Cameron are now almost neck-and-neck in terms of trust.

Up until recently Ed Miliband's poll ratings have been stubbornly low despite his party's popularity soaring. That could be beginning to change, perhaps. But The Sunday Times looks at a separate poll, suggesting the Tories are now on 29% - their worst standing since 2004 when Michael Howard was leader and the party was on course for a third general election defeat. Elsewhere it's noted that if these polls were translated in to a general election Labour would end up with a three-digit majority. That's always a silly thing to do, even though people can't resist doing it, but The Mail on Sunday claims Cameron has warned that things are going to get worse before they get better.

The Sunday Times also expects further Leveson trauma for David Cameron, if as expected former News International executive Rebekah Brooks divulges all the texts and emails she exchanged with the prime minister. Is Cameron regretting setting up the press ethics inquiry?

Presumably Jeremy Hunt wishes his boss hadn't started all this, as the culture secretary isn't spared the wrath of the Sunday papers. The Observer carries reports that the former BBC Trust chairman Sir Michael Lyons has weighed in on the row, saying Hunt was "too close" to the Murdochs. Not a position any senior BBC executive would find themselves in, of course, given the BBC and News International are poles apart in every way.

But the Observer ratchets up the pressure on Hunt, alleging that the row surrounding his alleged "cheerleading" of the BSkyB bid by the Murdochs is now affecting policy. According to the paper a set of government proposals on media regulation have now been shelved, because it would be politically impossible for them to be published at present without embarrassing Hunt. This might be the silver bullet - once policy is being affected by a minister's problems, resignation cannot be long in following.

A couple of the papers focus on the woman who used to date David Cameron but then decided to become a nun. Sister John Mary tells the Mail on Sunday that her breakup in the mid 1990s from Cameron profoundly affected her. She never dated another man in politics and later discovered God's calling. Is she praying for the Prime Minister in his most desperate hour? Unfortunately we're not told.

Here's the rest of the Sunday papers...

Jeremy Hunt should resign if he has any decency and values integrity. He is too close to the mire. We all know that he will have been aware of the goings on of his 'special adviser'. It is his adviser, doing things on his behalf. He needs to grow a and resign. He's been found out. If he carries on he'll have to go in the long-term and then he will seriously be uop to his neck in it by then. And Camoron should set up an inquiry now!

This Times published poll does not appear very credible to me. Too many coincidences i) Coincides with News Internationals issues with government questions ii) Coincides (but not very convincingly) with post-general election blues that have suddenly become ignited by London elections where polls show Tories ahead of Labour after Red Ken admitted to not even understanding his own finances. So now if the reds cant win by fair means they are going to skew polls, poorly communicate political stats and desperately do anything they can to convince people they are not in a shambles. And we see through this alot in the media with things such as rumour mongering and gossiping about strikes that dont even happen.
Essentially if there was a general election in 2 weeks and you really think the Conservatives would get a 29% poll share you need your head examined. So you reckon we're all going to vote BNP and UKIP as a result of a leftie person pressing for a spin cycle (with ecowash for their delicates). Dont think so somehow given the findings of other polls. If it makes you feel better for a day or so go and delude yourselves! But please dont waste our time.

Yet you've "wasted" some of your time in responding I see. I too don't believe that these polls are that accurate. Though I daresay they do reflect a certain mood swing taking place in the country at large. T

The London Mayoral election in any case is essentially a contest between two ego-centric and fairly maverick politicians, who have on more than one or two occasions been somewhat of an embarrassment to their respective Parties. So to draw any concrete conclusions over which party currently enjoys the support of the electorate here are somewhat erroneous. I suspect that Labour will gain quite a few Councils and the Tories will lose a few next Thursday. It's the usual political anti-government cycle of voter anoyance producing the psephological swings and roundabouts again. Personally I deplore local elections because thay are usually fought against the backdrop of issues that are anything but local. Our media are all to blame for this whether they lean towards the Left or Right editorially.

Is'nt strange how some politicians fall blindly into the same old trap of power corrups, they never seem to learn. Maybe it's because they believe they are above the government code of practise and above the rule of common law ? Or yet again maybe they are not as clever as they may think ? Lots of questions but no easy answers let's all wait for the next one to fall headlong into the same trap of power corrups my guess you won't have to wait very long.

Rupert Murdoch’s Fishy M.P. Meetings

The mogul says that News Corp. has been meeting privately with members of the Parliament committee investigating his empire.

Unfortunately this state of affairs is true whichever party gets into power. Our system rarely produces an electoral majority for any of them. Most politicians enter Parliament knowing that at least 50% or more of their constituents didn't actually vote for them. It's one of the vagaries of our 'first past the post' system. Whilst it normally produces decisive results and is in theory democratic. It cannot be said to produce entirely accurately representative ones. I'm not sure I support PR though. That too can produce some very undesiralble results.
06:18 PM on 04/29/2012
That should read Loaf, sorry.
06:17 PM on 04/29/2012
Why does everyone keep voting for the same old parties? We have been mis-governed for the last 40 years by mp's who only seem intent on lining their own nests, just look at their salaries and pension deals, many of them out of touch millionaires, what do they care if a lof costs £5 they would still be able to afford it. Please, vote for someone else for a change, BNP, UKIP whoever, no one could make a worse mess of things than the previous 40 years worth of incompetents.
Your future is in your hands, give someone else a chance to get us back on track.

Such as?

Are you offering yourself up for election on the basis that you believe that we've been so mis-governed for the past 40 years or so?

Post us a manifesto of what you'd do different and let us make a judgement on your proposeals.
02:31 PM on 04/30/2012
Hi, not sure if you are suggesting that we haven't been badly governed for the last 40 years or not. With regards to a manifesto, where do you start, education, defense, banking, railways, public transport, immigration, border control, national health you name it everything is a shambles. Have you seen the state of the pot holes in the roads?
At least when I left school I had a good education, my grand kids can hardly spell their own names.

The PM warned that things ahead are going to get worse well of coarse they are with this out of touch lot. This government are a absolute disaster for this country and he is absolutely right things are going to get worse under his leadership a hell of lot worse.
04:54 PM on 04/29/2012

03:40 PM on 04/29/2012
the torys are used to taking a pounding .. they learn that in public school......
04:52 PM on 04/29/2012
They are also taught how to ignore people they regard of no account, inferior and are of no consequence ie in their warped thinking that means us. They then take that 'superior mindset' into government or whatever walk of life they wish to pursue. Osborn is a prime example of this.
03:39 PM on 04/29/2012
It has only taken two years of Tory and LibDem misrule to show us that the tory leopard cannot change its spots and the libdems will surley be put to the sword in the coming election
labour did leave the country in a mess but only after the greedy rich bankers had torn the heart out the country never forget whose side they are on we all know who that is.. labour worked hard to give us new schools new hospitals peace in northern ireland more doctors nurses teachers police the list goes on and on yes mistakes were made but you only have to see what this government is doing to make ones blood boil.. you never had anything like that with the tories they had 18 years to build new schools and hospitals but never did northen ireland was a shambles when labour came to power tories only tell us what was wrong under labour not was achieved on the peoples behalf DONT LET THE TORIES FOOL YOU AGAIN WITH THEIR LIES
07:14 PM on 04/29/2012
AND DO NOT BE FOOLED AGAIN BY LABOUR
07:21 PM on 04/29/2012

It's not that I disagree with the one policy that makes voting UKIP a reasonalble consideration i.e exit from the EU. I just don't believe that they'd have the balls to do it if in power. In any case they'd be blown off course financially within a week of coming into office by the International Financiers, who'd wreck our economy.
09:22 PM on 05/06/2012
One difference between Cam, Oz and Boris ,one is a winner and two are looses.Vote Ukip, now if only Boris and a few other Tory Eu sceptics would join them.
02:51 PM on 04/29/2012
Why is it that Vince Cable (anti takeover of BSkyB) was sacked from that part of his job, but Jeremy Hunt (very pro the takeover) is still there while his assistant resigned. If he knew what was going on then he needs to go. If he didn't know what was going on he needs to go. The Murdochs (Rupert and James) seem to have a family amnesia thing going on. Is it catching? Have David Cameron & Jeremy Hunt caught it too? Of course they were 'in bed' with the Murdochs.

Abandon hope when you post on here

As a Tory who voted in the last election, Cameron has taken politics to the lowest level for generations, he has made the Conservatives unelectable for two generations and that fills me with despair, because if he had stuck to what he had said there was some hope, but he has run like a man with diarrhoea. My second dissapointment is that when he is deposed at the next election we will get looney labour back, the people who caused the problem in the first place, if this happens Gt Britain will end up on E BAY. Isnt there a Tory minister with the backbone to challenge Cameron for the leadership and offer the country a way out. All thats left if this fails is UKIP.
05:43 PM on 04/29/2012
Anything is better than this shower of rich idiots who were NEVER elected in the first place !! They are the most disgusting bunch of crooks to ever take office !! Osborne and cam-moron should be confined to the nearest dustbin for life !!
Labour, under Miliband are also a bunch of wet uninspiring clowns.
Ukip with Farage at the helm speak far more sense than all the other parties in westminster !
Until we get a REAL government who make the rich pay there correct dues, and enable the poor ,to be free of all tax if they earn lessd than 15k the better.
The BNP is alo an option ! At least they are on the side of BRITISH people !
