Labour Calls David Cameron To Commons To Explain Why Jeremy Hunt Inquiry Blocked

Jeremy Hunt

David Cameron has been asked to explain why he has referred culture secretary Jeremy Hunt to the Leveson inquiry and not the independent adviser on minister's interests.

Labour will call for the the prime minister to defend himself to MPs on Monday after he refused to launch inquiry into Hunt's alleged breach of the ministerial code.

The culture secretary has been accused of acting as a "cheerleader" for News Corporation's BSkyB takeover bid after the Leveson Inquiry published a raft of email exchanges between the company's chief lobbyist and Hunt's office.

Lord Justice Leveson has rebuffed Hunt's request to appear early so the issue will not be tackled in the inquiry until at least mid-May.

It is also thought Leveson will not rule on whether Hunt has broken the ministerial code in his dealings with Rupert Murdoch's company, adding pressure to Cameron to launch an official independent inquiry.

Labour have now insisted Cameron appears in parliament to personally explain why he is "trying to hide behind the Leveson inquiry".

"With parliament breaking up on Tuesday, Cameron must come to the Commons and explain to the British people why he is ducking his responsibilities to enforce the ministerial code," the party said.

But Cameron insisted he did not duck his responsibilities for "one second".

"I think we need to be absolutely clear that the ministerial code is for me, the behaviour of ministers is for me," he said.

"If ministers have behaved badly, broken the ministerial code, it is my responsibility either to ask Alex Allan's advice about what should happen or to take action myself and say they can't remain in the government."

On Sunday the prime minister said Hunt's special adviser Adam Smith had been right to resign over his contacts with News Corporation lobbyist Frederic Michel, which were "too close, too frequent".

But he added: "I don't think it would be right in every circumstance if a special adviser gets something wrong to automatically sack the minister."

Labour accused Hunt of having misled parliament when he told the Commons last year he was releasing "all the documents relating to all the meetings, all the consultation documents, all the submissions we received, all the exchanges between my department and News Corporation".

Last week a raft of emails between Rupert Murdoch's company and Hunt's office came to light for the first time - exposing the culture secretary to damaging allegations that he supported News Corporation's bid when he was supposed to be impartial.

Labour's deputy leader and shadow culture secretary Harriet Harman said it was "already evident that Jeremy Hunt has breached the ministerial code".

"Not only has he breached the ministerial code in many, many ways, but even more seriously than that when he was responsible for acting quasi-judicially on a hugely important takeover bid of £8 billion he did not act impartially.

"I just think it says everything about David Cameron that he is refusing to refer him to Sir Alex Allan, to investigate all these breaches of the ministerial code."

Ever since Blair set the wheels in motion we Brits, have lost our self-respect, pride in our country, by being forced into taking part with the EU unelected bureaucrats in Brussels, who NOW demand that the EU flag must be flown continuously over Whitehall!

To make matters worse, the EU has threatened to FINE our government if it does not comply!

Under the proposed change, drafted by the European Commission, more than 1,000 different bodies would be forced to comply, including Cambridge University, Jamie Oliver's 15 restaurant in Cornwall and The Crucible Theatre in Sheffield, known as the 'home of snooker'.

At the present time, 80% of our laws are made by unelected jobsworths in Brussels and Strasbourg.

This is a scandalous situation, considering the enormous sacrifices made by hundreds of thousands of our brave war heroes in two World Wars to keep our country free, sovereign and independent.

The whole 'European Union' is an affront to generations of British patriots who perished fighting plans for a European super-state.

We should all be calling our MP's or emailing their offices, let them all know that we British disaprove of interference to OUR way of life from the EU; in fact surely we Brits should be looking to get out of the EU period!

It is time we held our politicians to account...they are ALL to blame!

I agree with most of your view. I'm so glad I emigrated to Australia.

It started with Thatcher, then Blair and now Cameron and the not so amazing thing was the media mogul who chose each of them to win through the strength of his newspaper's biased reporting

"Explain Why Jeremy Hunt Inquiry Blocked"
Want to keep your job?
When all about are losing theirs and blaming that on you.
And trust to polices when nations doubt them,
Yet alter allowances for high earners, despite that doubting too;
If you cant fix insatiable unraveling EUs
By putting all those scoundrels on the run,
Yours isn’t the Earth nor anything that's in it,
And - which is more – you won’t be Murdoch’s man, my son!

"the Leveson inquiry"
Don’t worry if you miss it. There’ll be another along in a minute.

"acting as a "cheerleader"
2, 4, 8, 16. More c**kups than you’ve ever seen.

"a raft of email exchanges"
adrift on a painted “see”.
Transparency, transparency, everywhere.
But what might be the fee?

"With parliament breaking up on Tuesday,"
and the Common Market breaking up soon thereafter. No real hurry really.

"the behaviour of ministers"
appears to be, throw the cabin boy overboard. If that doesn’t work, throw the first officer after him. Just save the Captain of the Contanic.

"he was supposed to be impartial."
Just like Vince was. Talk about vassal-lating from one extreme to the other.

Why are the LibDems so quiet on this issue. I have not heard a word from any of them who have any authority. They must be so embarrassed to be in the bed with the Conservatives, that they are afraid to say anything.

The only thing I have heard them say is that they did not have any contact with Murdoch, or did they have contact?

The Leveson inquiry is into media standards and has nothing to do with ministerial conduct. Even someone as limited as Pasty Cameron knows this. This inaction is merely a delaying tactic to avoid the shredder overheating and any damage to fingers from repeated pressing of the delete button. It's not as if Hunt hasn't got previous. I suspect too that Cameron is frightened to death that Hunt will take him down with him as there is much more to his involvement than the occasional horse ride.

The Leveson inquiry is an investigation into media standards; it has nothing whatever to do with ministerial conduct. Even someone as limited as Cameron knows this. He is merely delaying the inevitable inquiry to stop the shredder overheating and damaging fingers by repeated use of the delete button. It's not as if Jeremy Hunt doesn't have a history of dubious practice. Of course, Cameron has to be very careful or Hunt could bring him down too. I suspect there's more to his role than the occasional horse ride.

Having read DC's et al words I'm in no doubt that we're into 'smoke and mirrors' here.
Before we all join the 'Let's hang JH et al' bandwagon, what actual good would this do us, the voting public??
The last administration was floundering, this one is too, or so it seems!! We've almost reached the point where none of us trust any politicians, but, it is they via our votes who run the place.
So we're faced with a difficult choice, Do we 'boot out' this lot ASAP. only then to get another shambolic crew in by default? Or give this lot some space in the hope they can get us out of the mess we're in??
I'm sure though that the sacking JH will have any lasting benefit or be any real part of the solution...

It took the last government 13 years before they lost power and even when they did not have the best leader, the Conservatives could not take full power.

It has only taken two years to realise that the Conservatives are a shambles and the economy is going down the tube.

The matter on the benefit of Hunt's departure is whether the country is happy with the conduct with this person, given his fingerprints are all over the deal that his friend wanted, is either competent, he said he did not know that his aide was communicating with Murdoch, or he had either a pecuniary or idealistic interest in the deal for Murdoch.

Surely he cannot be carrying out his work with these questions hanging over him and that is why he should do the decent thing and resign. If he doesn't, Cameron should have the guts to sack him.

Apparently, there's not a tree large enough for Hunt to hide behind.

Adam Smith (Jeremy Hunt's special advisor) fell on his sword in order to protect Mr Hunt.
If Mr Hunt's actions are properly investigated then he, in turn, will need to fall on his sword in order to protect the Prime Minister.

Perhaps Mr Cameron fears that Mr Hunt would, instead, drag the Prime Minister down with him and this fear has resulted in his wish to avoid an investigation by Alex Allen.

Labour if they are clever can deliver a hammer blow to Dodgy Dave and the smug Hunt as this will lead to the truth about the relationship between Murdoch and this government . Their behaviour and actions to date only confirm their dishonesty and utter contempt for the people of Britian ,along with the hapless Osborne they should be slung out of office .

Cameron has been duplicitous from day one since his reign of power, reneging on electoral promises as though they mean nothing because the public DO NOT MATTER. Now he's at it again, shielding top level corruption. Cameron is not a war criminal but he is a Peace criminal without morals.

The smirk that Hunt wears is sickening to the core, in the knowledge that his boss is backing him, only because he knows that Cameron, too, has something to hide. What other evidence has Cameron, got to prove that Hunt is telling the truth, fact is, other than guessing he has none. It is also sickening to the core, to know that Labour, are also full of corrupt practices. It is that ongoing game of changing places, in that one or the other will rule for a short time, and in that time, they are immune to all kinds of accusations, for the Teflon predictables. There is only final solution, and that is, for the British people, to wake up to an immediate change from their favourite predictables who have become incompetent, because they can.......
