Bethaney Wallace's parents told how she had appeared to turn a corner before her death

A model who graced the cover of teen magazines has died of anorexia at just 19 years old.

Bethaney Wallace, who had suffered with an eating disorder for three years, was under 7st and too weak to work before her death.

She began modelling at just 12, being pictured in teen magazines Make It Groovy, Popgirl and Girl Talk.

Her father Clive told the Daily Mail the teen believed she was fat, saying: "She would say she was fat but she was so beautiful – she didn't realise how beautiful she was. She had up days and down days. It was like Jekyll and Hyde.

"I tried to warn her that her organs would fail but she just said: 'Don't be silly'. If you mentioned food it would start an argument."

Ms Wallace, from Newmarket, Suffolk, had been receiving medical attention but died in her sleep on 18 April at her grandmother's house.

Her father said before her death she appeared to have been making "good progress" and had an eating plan. But her parents said doctors believed her heart had failed after being weakened by the disease.

Her mother Cathy said she had watched her daughter deteriorate in front of her, saying: "You are slowly watching your child die."

A spokesperson for eating disorders charity B-eat said the illnesses took a "huge toll on the body": "Our hearts go out to Bethaney's family.

"Eating disorders are devastating illnesses and it is particularly poignant that she had been making progress in her battle to beat her illness."

Her death comes after a recovering anorexic called for airbrushed images in adverts aimed at children to be banned.

An inquest was opened and adjourned on 23 April.

Wow, what a beautiful girl. Such a tragic waste of a life. I wonder if her modeling in her childhood had any influence on this case.
03:07 PM on 05/02/2012
Probably. All the influences of so called fashionista's would have made her unhealthily aware of the 'fat' in or on her body. She is the result of misled people who glorify size zero's. The fashion houses who display their wares on the skinniest of models are culpable in this poor girls death. What an absolute waste.

These girls (and guys) all have one thing in common....they all have agents! Start suing the agent for dereliction of duty, a lack of 'duty of care' and anything else you can think of under the health and safety at work act. They will soon be stopping their golden gooses from killing themselves to get that 'lucrative' deal and instead will start putting the average sized kids forward for the best jobs. Almost all people with anorexia have at some point been told they are overweight, a little chubby, could lose a few pounds etc, chances are it's their agents!

Very very sad. I am glad my girls are happy in their "average" sized bodies.

Not for long...the media will take hold soon.

No, we have already passed that phase! Luckily they stood strong, realised they are beautiful, intelligent and popular and don't need to be a size zero.

Another sad loss of such a young life. It's about time these magazines were brought to account, as their the reason all these young girls turn Anorexic, because all they see is models who look like stick insects and it's all wrong. How many more young girls have to die before something is done. To those girls like poor Bethaney it's the 'Norm' to look skinny through all these pictures in magazines.

Ditch the scales at home. My youngest started to get teased and worried, I threw them out and told her they broke - problem solved. Good luck :)

It is NOT a disease like cancer. Don't be so ignorant, have more respect for cancer sufferers and their families.

Wrong.

What a tragedy for her parents to bear losing their child in such a needless way. My heart goes out to them and their sorrow must be unbearable.

They ought to ban underweight models from Magazines like Israel has done. Victoria Beckham would be off first go!

I am genuinely stunned that a girl so davastatingly beautiful could convince herself that she was 'fat' My heart skipped a beat when i saw just how beautiful she was, most of us (guys) would give anything to be able to appreciate a girl as beautiful as her. It really does break my heart,......so, so sad. If i was ever fortunate enough to have a girlfriend as beautiful as Bethany i would utilise every waking moment to convince her that was a genetic lottery winner and as beautiful as any woman could possibly hope to be. She really has made an enourmous impact on me. To think that there are girls out there that are so heart achingly beautiful that convince themselves that they are 'fat' or 'ugly' due to this horrible disease is tragic beyond belief. Oh how i wish i had known her, i would have done everything possible to make her understand that it isn't possible to be any more beautiful than she already was. Guys dream of having such a pretty woman to appreciate and show off to the world. Wasn't it possible to feed her intravenously? or something along those lines? My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends whom i'm sure did everything they possibly could. R.I.P. Bethany.....definately a girl whose beauty will illuminate the heavens......xxx

That is so lovely. Everything was done to convince Bethaney how beautiful she was.
Her illness started from Glandular fever where she lost her appetite and then food became a problem. She gave up modelling when she started college to concentrate on her work so wasn't obsessed with modelling as papers would like to make out.
It's an illness that can effect anybody in any family. She did some shots again later to get a portfolio. She saw good in people what ever they looked like . I'm sure she would have seen the good in you, don't put yourself down.
She was making progress with counselling and was a shock when she passed away like she did. feeding intravenously when they reach a stage they cannot get out of bed but the days before she died she had been out clubbing and swimming the night she died so she wasn't at that stage .That's the worse thing she was trying to get her life back together.

How tragically sad, my heart goes out to her family.

It is a vile disease that takes over your brain and every waking moment, but whilst it plays it's part, it is not all down to models and the fashion industry. I suffer it and developed osteoporosis in my 30's after being just 5 stone 10 aged 18. The cause, my mother said I had a "fat backside" and I had other parental problems. I very much hope more can be done to help those who are vulnerable to it.

Every child is vulnerable to oft repeated thoughtless comments - by parents especially. The parent is the centre of its child's universe - analogous to a 'god' - and when that 'god' tells its creation it is unworthy, faulty, flawed, the effect is the destruction of the child's self-esteem, and henceforth it will do everything in its puny power to earn that 'god's' approval, and will concentrate its efforts on those things it has been taught it is 'deficient'. The thoughtless teasing has become a cruel edict from a revered, lofty being, and, sadly, many such parents don't even realise the damage their thoughtlessness is causing. Some, I know too well, make such scathing comments for reasons impenetrable to me. The images of unnatural 'perfection' children see, in magazines and films and advertisements, can only reinforce that belief in its own less than perfect form. Anorexia is sometimes the manifestation of those desperate attempts to please the god and conform to its unreal criteria. A disease very difficult to control - and when control fails, tragedy follows, as in this sad case of a lovely young woman. I wish you well, Willow, in dealing with yours, and I hope the osteoporosis soon returns to its normal functioning.

So sad but so hard to cure and to deal with. Having been married to a model who had a slight problem with this but has a younger sister who is cronic .It is so so hard to get them to understand their NOT FAT . To parents as a tip if you see them start to eat only chocolate and drink only Coco Cola you may have the start of the same problem ,it is a classic sign !!!
