Jupiter Juice Mission Set To Launch

A mission to Jupiter is set to be approved tomorrow, when the European Space Agency meets in Paris.

The Jupiter mission, which will cost £695 million, or the more impressive $1.1 billion, will search for life on the distant planet and its moons. It will focus on the "in-depth study" of Europa and the Jupiter system, according to the UK Space Agency.

The Jupiter icy moon explorer (juice) probe would take ten years to build, and could launch in 2022. It will take a further eight years to reach Jupiter. The mission will cruise for seven to eight years, then spend four years in orbit.

So, we sit and wait for white smoke to emerge from Esa's SPC in Paris. Esa to decide on Juice mission to Jupiter

Juice is the result of a five-year competition to determine Europe's next major venture into space.

According to Planetary.org, Juice is recommended over ATHENA, an x-ray observatory, and NGO (a gravitational wave observatory).

To get the project off the ground, a majority vote is required at the science programme committee extraordinary meeting in Paris tomorrow.

Quick Poll

Should we spend £695 million looking for life on Jupiter?

VOTE

Juice would be a five-tonne, instrument-filled satellite which would head to the solar system's biggest and make observations of investigation of three of its largest moons.

It will use Jupiter's gravity to zoom in to Callisto, Europa and Ganymede.

The bevy of instruments, which do not come under the £695m budget, will include:
Magnetometer - to measure the magnetic fields of Jupiter and its moons.

JuMMP (Jupiter Magnetosphere and Moons Plasma investigation) - to study plasma in Jupiter’s magnetosphere, and the interaction between the Jupiter and Ganymede.

JUDE (Jovian Ultraviolet Dynamics Experiment) - the camera, or broadband ultraviolet imager, to show electromagnetic coupling on Ganymede and Jupiter.

ORTIS (Oxford/RAL TeraHerz Infrared Sensor) - will measure water and wind on Jupiter and map surface and sub-surface temperatures on Ganymede and Jupiter.

Strange thing we know more about space then our own seas which cover this planet.
23:20 on 05/05/2012
Do you mean seas or the sea beds ..?? The sea/ocean beds have been more than adequately mapped to a high degree of precision ... you want to know more ..?? Try Google Earth and switch on the ocean coverage ...

Science FTW.

We will never find a planet as beautiful or as rich in resources as planet Earth, so spend the money we have to preserve what we have got
05:42 on 03/05/2012
Oh, come on, everyone - the ENTIRE cost of this proposed mission to Jupiter will be LESS than what the UK alone has been spending EVERY SIX MONTHS on our missions to Afghanistan and Iraq over the last ten years. Given that comparison, it's a bargain.

Can we not fix the pothole's in our road system first . then maybe we can travel to the star's and beyond
22:51 on 02/05/2012
Oh wow ... let's all clap our hands at the prospect of gaining so much meaningful data about Jupiter ... I always wondered, whilst viewing that magnificent planet, what may lay in store for us, if only we knew more about it ... now, I'm satisfied that we are in good hands .. a billion Euros is/are small potatoes compared to the intellectual enrichment to be gained from this epic voyage ...!!

Science and technology- Regardless of the funding it will promote skills, jobs, manufacturing and cohesion amongst all the EU participants.
We still need unskilled workers- but what an opportunity for graduates with the proper degrees!

I'm already bored of this new millennium - the sooner we get this rock, the better! Yes, there's economics, and peeps will always complain about spending. But at the end of the day, unless we push forward, we'll end up going backwards. So consider this: cavemen didn't have economics. Didn't have much of a vocabulary, either. Ugh.
22:55 on 02/05/2012
Cavemen didn't have the tories, labour or lib dems either.
So don't vote like a caveman, get this 3 out, then perhaps we can move forward without spending £695 million on a tin can that will take 10 years to build and several more getting there!
Many of us won't be here then. Ugh.

The Agency is nothing to do with the EU - Some small part will some from the UK out of the 19 member states and will more than likely involve a lot of tech from the Uk and win us Contracts in high end research and development. We would spend money ion research and development anyway otherwise could be taken over by the likes of North Korea -

62% said yes ! and there's me thinking that most of the EU countries were broke!

The BRITISH TAXPAYER cannot afford to contribute to this pie-in-the-sky experiment, niether can the EU as a whole. Can someone please inform those spendthrift bonzos that we and the EU are BANKRUPT! £695 million pounds or $1.1 Billion is money that we all just cannot waste!!

You are absoluteltly right, but watch.! They all can afford it , if they all tell enough `porky pies.` to the pro literiate.!
While enjoying a `spiffing good time themselves.`
Anyone for tennis chaps , .....In Scotland.!
The SNP devolved government , to my knowledge , is the only totally elected body, in he UK, that has made good it`s election promises. and deserves my vote. That is porbably why they have the mandate of the Scottish people. The Tories , and worse still, the power, at any cost, lib dems, are not any form of alternatve for good old Scottish iniative. Nor , in my opinion, any form of decent government in England .But that should not be the choice of Scottish people. The SNP, under Alex Salmond , have delivered their election promises to the Scottish people , and therefor deserves to be heard.

No, not Jupiter, just a better place, north of the wall..
A place where some of the politicians work for the people of the country they are elected to represent.
40 billion for the banking /finance sector, 10 billion to the IMF, and now 695 million for space exploration.? Sound to me , like a very affluent country. Do you think there exists a possiblity, that your Westminster `old boys club` may be lying to you.? Instead of `austerity`measures, The SNP here, have a much better way.
With medicine prescription charges beyond the means of the `benefitless` society, proposed by the Tory government, I can foresee a time, when people entering Scotland from the south, will need to undergo health checks , before being admitted, as with any other 3rd world country, to prevent communicable diseases.
