Manchester United Striker Wayne Rooney's Volley V Manchester City Voted Greatest Premier League Goal Ever (VIDEO)

Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney's bicycle-kick winner in last year's Manchester derby has been voted the greatest Premier League goal of all time.

Rooney's sensational strike in February 2011 against City received 26 per cent of the vote. Dennis Bergkamp was second for his 2002 goal at Newcastle, with Thierry Henry's flicked-up volley against Manchester United in September 2000 coming in third.

Ten years ago, United midfielder David Beckham won the Goal of the 10 Seasons Award in 2002 for his halfway-line effort past Wimbledon's Neil Sullivan in August 1996.

On his accolade, Rooney said: "I grew up watching the Premier League so to be voted the best goal in the history of the Premier League is a great feeling," Rooney said.

"There's so many good goals in that shortlist, goals that I watched in my living room as a kid: Alan Shearer's goal, Paolo Di Canio's, Tony Yeboah's, David Beckham's."

He added: "To be competing with them and winning is a great honour for me and something I'm very proud of. I'd like to say a big thank you to all the fans that voted for me."

With the score at 1-1 in last season's Old Trafford derby, Portuguese winger Nani's deflected cross enabled Rooney to lose marker Vincent Kompany, who slipped as the ball's flight changed, before unleashing an unstoppable volley past England team-mate Joe Hart.

Up until his goal Rooney was having a wretched game as he continued to struggle after his World Cup hangover, which took in allegations of an affair with a prostitute and him handing in a transfer request at United.

Just seven seconds before his effort, he miscued a pass horribly which was rescued by Paul Scholes, who in turn fed Nani, and the rest is history.

And the 26-year-old's sixth derby strike elevated his performance level for the remainder of the season, He scored a hat-trick against West Ham, the winner at Chelsea in the Champions League and the penalty away to Blackburn which clinched United's record 19th league title.

In tribute to the Croxteth Evertonian, here's some other bicycle/scissor-kick belters...

of course rooneys goal for man u was the best goal ever scored. after all, anything that the mighty man u can do, no other team can do better. thats why they have so many glory hunters that they do, especially the fans they picked up since the champions league cup.

Rooneys effort could have gone anywhere !! As overhead kicks go it was average !! Messi has scored 20+ better goals this season alone !! Brazils 4th goal in the 1970 final is beyond doubt the BEST TEAM goal ever scored !!
Also when you talk of great goals , look at the 1974 dutch team !! they scored unbelivable goals in every match ! Ari Haan , Rene Van der Kerkof, Cryff , johnny Rep etc etc . Rooneys goal the best ever ??? dont make me laugh !!!!

Not the premiership but the fourth Brazilian goal in the 1970 world cup final by Carlos Alberto Torres. It's not just the shot but the build up and the occasion, simply the best goal ever scored by the best team that ever played. Oh and he was the right back which adds even more.
