Emma Winnall
Emma Winnall suffered severe injuries

Police investigating a savage attack on a 94-year-old woman as she slept will speak to the pensioner about her ordeal for the first time.

Specially-trained officers will interview Emma Winnall on Saturday in hospital, where is recovering after emergency surgery.

She was assaulted in her own bed at her home in Pensby Close, Moseley, Birmingham, some time between 9pm on Monday and 9am on Tuesday, when she was found by her carer.

The attack, described by police as sickening and senseless, left the frail pensioner with multiple injuries including a fractured skull, a broken arm and wrist and a partially severed finger.

She has been sedated for much of her time in hospital, where she has had metal plates inserted into her arm.

A shocking photograph showing the extent of her injuries was released by West Midlands Police yesterday, at the request of Mrs Winnall's daughter, in a bid to persuade anyone with information to come forward.

Police said nothing appeared to have been stolen from the victim's home and the inside of the property was "largely undisturbed".

Detective Chief Inspector Sarb Johal said: "We believe an implement of some sort was used during the assault. Our forensics experts are scouring the property in the hope of shedding some light on exactly what happened.

"She suffered very nasty injuries and ones which, given her age, could well have been life-threatening.

"This is a truly sickening attack on a defenceless, frail lady as she slept in her own home. Mrs Winnall had nothing of note to steal.

"It was a senseless assault and I'd urge anyone with suspicions about who may be responsible to get in touch straight away.

"The attacker may well have mentioned something to a friend or relative. Or perhaps someone remembers a person acting oddly that evening or the following morning.

"I'm sure the answer to this vicious assault lies in our local communities, so we're appealing for help to try and trace the offender."

Anyone with information is asked to contact West Midlands Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

She was assaulted in her own bed at her home in Pensby Close, Moseley, Birmingham, some time between 9pm on Monday and 9am on Tuesday, when she was found by her carer.

So, her caregiver wasn't there between 9pm Monday until 9am Tuesday? Shouldn't a lady of this advanced age be checked on every day, more than once? Where was the daughter between those hours? Something doesn't sound right about this. Nothing was taken, so it wasn't burglary. Just an horrific beating that could well have killed her. Only a demented coward would do such a thing.

Why bother type all this rubbish, bottom line is a 94 year old vulnerable old lady was beaten up by a thug and why do the timelines etc matter more to you now? Most people with any compassion immediately react to the senslessness of this crime not all the rubbish you are asking. Straightuptalker my foot......

Read this article and got sick to my stomach. Poor Lady. I hope the Police will catch whoever did this vile act and be served in like manner once the criminal or criminals will enter prison. Abusing seniors is like abusing children. What is this world coming to?

The police need to find whoever did this and make an example to stop this kind of behavior.
There don't seem to be any proportionate punishments handed out these days, leaving criminals to carry out ever worsening crimes, knowing that they will barely be punished.
I would like to see whoever did this burnt at the stake.

get well soon emma.

my heart goes out to this poor lady ,get well some emma., and now my rant, its about time the people in power made prison a place to be feared, not cushy holiday camps for the criminal class, give them longer sentences, 6 to a cell, and keep them locked up in their cells longer, if their family wants to visit them dont give them free bus passes or allow them to claim back their fares, also make their familys responsible for their food while in prison, all this talk about rehabilitation for prisoners is a joke the majority offend again and again and have no fear about getting caught, its time they feared getting put back in prison.

I just can't get my head around the fact that a person reaches the grand old age of 94 and gets beaten mercilessly in their own home, where they should feel and be safe !
How frail a person of this age is and how can another human being actually attack someone like this- it is beyond my comprehension, and that of most people I think.
If, and when, the culprit is caught there should be no mercy whatsoever given to them.
Lets hope they get a judge with a proper sense of right and wrong and not someone who will hand out a pathetic sentence.
This lady is lucky to be alive, but no thanks to the person who did this to her - my heart goes out to her and her family, hopefully she will recover, but her faith in human nature will never recover, it must have been the most terrifying ordeal imaginable.
Love to you Emma, there are lots of people who wish you well xxxxxxxxx

Beautiful words ebell411. I did post a few comments but HuffPost declined to print them. Basically I was saying that a prison sentence is too kind for this scum.

Thank you - keeponrocking - you are so right - a prison sentence it too kind, but in this ' civilized' world that's all they will get.

We should start something on Facebook to support this woman & her family. I am sick reading this, hope whoever did this rots in hell.

its these kind of low lifes that Clark wants employers to give preference to on their release from prison. When are we going to get some mps who live in the real world ? They never come into contact with these animals in their cushioned life so they hav`nt got a clue. and dont get me started on the army of do-gooders infecting the legal system.

Please don't insult animals. The problem is "the do-gooders" brought in human rights, and you have to be a criminal to have those rights.

You are right, they are the only people who seem to benefit!

I'd like to see whomever committed this awful act flogged then sent to prison for life. Lets make an example of this coward. Hope the poor lady recovers well.

I agree and think we should bring back the whipping post. Some creeps deserve to get whipped, particularly the cowards that beat up an aged woman in her own bed.
