Nick Clegg Missed 'Tremendous' Opportunity To Get Ahead In Polls, Says Tavish Scott MSP

Murdoch's relationship with the Conservatives was a 'gift' to Clegg, says Scott

A former Scottish Liberal Democrat leader has criticised Nick Clegg in the aftermath of heavy losses at the local government elections.

Tavish Scott, the Shetland MSP and former Scottish Executive minister, said the UK party leader missed a "tremendous" opportunity to get on the front foot ahead of the polls.

Writing in the Scotsman newspaper, Scott said he should have concentrated on David Cameron's links to media tycoon Rupert Murdoch.

He compared the UK approach with that of Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie, who has questioned First Minister Alex Salmond over his links to the News Corporation chairman, including a meeting at his official residence in Edinburgh.

Scott wrote: "Nick Clegg had one tremendous opportunity to get on the front political foot. Murdoch should have been a gift to the UK Lib Dems.

"Here in Scotland, Willie Rennie hammered Salmond over tea and Tunnock's in Bute House with the man responsible for a media empire whose modus operandi was illegal.

"Yet in London, Clegg could and should have done the same to Cameron. Coalition or no coalition, this was a gift. (Culture Secretary) Jeremy Hunt is without doubt a cheerleader for all things Murdoch. Clegg should have demanded his dismissal or at least his suspension."

The Lib Dem vote appeared to suffer badly in Scotland. One of the highest profile casualties was Jenny Dawe, the defending Lib Dem council leader in Edinburgh. Her group was reduced by 13 to a rump of three councillors.

Voters in one capital ward gave more support to a man dressed as a penguin than a Lib Dem candidate.

In Glasgow, the Lib Dems were left with a single seat, while they also suffered heavy defeats in Aberdeen,
Aberdeenshire and Fife - authorities they had helped to run.

Meanwhile, Labour and the SNP made gains across Scotland, while the Greens made notable advances in Edinburgh, winning six seats.

Labour took majority control of Glasgow, which the SNP had targeted, and became the largest party in Aberdeen and Edinburgh.

But the SNP - in contrast to the Conservatives in England - made significant gains despite being the party of government at Holyrood.

The SNP increased its tally of councillors by 57, compared with results from 2007, and remain the largest party spread across Scotland's 32 councils.

Scott said the "spectre" of coalition with the Tories had affected the results for his party, suggesting Lib Dems adopt an SNP tactic.

"The future is not to criticise Salmond and the Nationalists, but use their model," he wrote. "Be a government and an opposition at the same time."

Just to remind readers south of the Border, this attack on Salmond led to the loss 95 Lib Dem councillors. Tavish Scott is not much of a seer.

I, being one of those you so neighbourly describe as ' south of the border ' , am not attacking Alex Salmond. He has an agenda that I believe will prove to be disastrous for Scotland. If Scots feel they want independence I have no problem with that and would bid you farewell with a cheery wave. As the great Willie Wonka once said....be careful what you wish for....you might just get it :-) . Scottish independence is pretty popular ' south of the border ' .

My response was to the 'attack' from the Tavish on Salmond not any other individual commenter. I tend to think that Scotland will be better off as an Independent country, so there we differ. all that remains is typing. Toodlepips.

I've said it many times. The disgraceful Lib Dems deserve to reap the whirlwind they have sown. I hope that their demise continues over the next 3 years and beyond and that they are wiped out at the next general election. Clegg won't lose any sleep over that. He is a multi-millionaire career politician and will take his seat in the House of Lords as reward for his treachery. Rank and file Lib Dems also have only themselves to blame. I don't often agree with 'West Lothian Questioner' but his comment that they (the Lib Dems) "sold their souls to the devil for a sniff at the rancid armpits of power" was spot on. I'd rather a full on Tory givernment then anything containing a Liberal Democrat. Although I would temper that by saying Cameron & Osborne must also go. If we're going to have a Conservative government then let's have a proper one, not some smarmy, chinless version of it.

The Democrats here in Australia also sold out all of us who voted for them.

They went from 10 members to nothing.

Clegg was seduced by his chance to have his equivalent of 15 minutes of fame

The post mortem of this local election result is bissare to say the least.

Basically the Torys are saying it was a bad result for them because they havent been `Tory` enougth, they need to be more traditional tory (in other words they need to be complete and utter ba**ards instead of just ba**erds)
The Lib Dems feel they have been hammered because they havent been `liberal` enougth.

All in all it should be interesting these comming months as the Torys move massively over to the right and the Lib Dems become more liberal...push and pull. Hopefully they will pull each other apart and the coalition will collapse

F & F from Aussieland mate

It disgusts me to think that in the last year the wealthiest people grew their fortunes by 5% and Cameron also gave them a 5% tax cut.

All this whilst the Tories and Lib Dems sunk the boot into the poorest while shrinking the economy

Dont forget its not just pensioners who have hammered cMORON and the Lib-Dum Lackies its a message from the sick and disabled, change your savage policies forcing genuine sick people in to work or Mr cMORON and Lib-Dum Lackie Mr Cleggy you will most certainly be booted out of power come the next general election, you two have been warned, the sick and disabled vote too, and we are watching you.

As people age they eventually become sick, disabled and generally vulnerable. The NHS cannot cope with such people so they end up in private sector care. Their homes have to be sold to pay for this care and their families have to face up to the fact that their inheritances have been spent, their aged parents are unable to recognise them because of dementia and they have to bear the guilt of choosing or being genuinely unable to care for them themselves. What political party has taken this reality on board? I work in a care home and have devised my own exit strategy in order to spare my family such financial and emotional suffering.

Labour are to be congratulated for their win in Scotland.

Whatever ones views on this, it shows despite the recession and the SNP they have worked hard for a victory.

It also shows that many in Scotland are worried as to where nationalism is taking them, no more so than in the rest of the UK. Its not as though suddenly the sea has rushed in and Scotland has become an Island on its own, and not as we are now as one Island one nation, or that the people have also turned into a master race...but to listen to some activists you might think so.

Regarding the LibDems, if they cant pppppick up a ppppenguin vote or more in their favour, then the Conservatives might as well form a coalition with the Penguin Party. At least it will be more entertaining than watching Nick Clegg weaving, ducking and diving to stay in power.

Come on now, lets be realistic. Congratulations to the Labour party for coming second.... again.

Good evening west lothian questioner,

Yes as I said, they have worked hard and have done well!..cant say I'm particularly a fan but credit where's its due.

Yes the SNP won 424 seats across Scotland, while Labour came second with 394!!

This magnitude of SECOND is not as bad as you deride. If Labour have done this well, the electorate have smelt a rat with Salmonds inflated talk, as Labour had zero support along the Conservatives at one time.

It sounds like HMS Salmond has hit an Ice berge!!!..and the electorate are waking up to what their jobs and futures will really be, especially as the EU is heading for a slump. The UK as a whole entity will survive this, it has before, but not Scotland if it isolates itself!.

Everyone knows the only reason Clegg put the Conservatives into power was because the Conservatives offered Clegg the position of Deputy Prime Minister.. His decision had nothing to do with policies or " what was best for the people ". Now he is reaping his rewards.
04:18 PM on 05/06/2012
the Tories did not have enough for a working majority , so the Liberals did a deal , in return for some of their views , in order to get the cuts through and the book balancing started

In the days when the liberal party merged with the social democratic party, I thought of them as the liberal so-dem-ites. Plus sa change plus de meme chose. If they canvas at my door, I keep them away from my young son and my dog.

Clegg's only principle is to go back to the party of his youth which was the conservative party.

After almost 100 years as the 'also rans' did anyone really expect anything else from the Liberals? They're just so happy to be in the limelight again, they'll say/do anything to stay there. Old Cleggy can't believe his luck, this is the closest any Lib is going to get to number 10. Having said that, hopefully this is the last time in a long time that any of the 'big three' get their post delivered there.

I have no time for the Liberals, however if they are so unhappy with Clegg, why keep him?

Clegg can't be surprised by all the flack, is not fit for purpose, he's let so many Libdems down by back tracking on his promises what more can he expect. One thing is certain, the Libdems will never get another chance at getting into Goverment.
