Code Breaking Cogs
The code-breaking cogs helped decipher German messages

A set of cogs from the Second World War Enigma code-breaking machine has been discovered after languishing in a cupboard for up to 30 years.

The three rotors were found at the Royal Navy training establishment HMS Collingwood in Fareham, Hampshire, in a cupboard used to store flags and other equipment.

At first Chief Petty Officer Craig "Blood" Read and Petty Officer Dan Powditch thought they were imitations and put them back into the store in the old HMS Mercury building only to re-examine them several weeks later.

It is now believed the items were spares for an Enigma machine which used to be kept at the centre and which was donated to the National Museum of the Royal Navy (NMRN) at Portsmouth in 1983.

Now the box of three rotors is to be reunited with the machine when they are donated to the NMRN on Wednesday - the 71st anniversary of the Royal Navy's first capture of a fully functioning Enigma machine.

The Enigma machine donated to the NMRN in 1983 by HMS Mercury is a type M4 machine.

Richard Noyce, curator of artefacts at the NMRN, said: "The number M15653 on the machine matches the number on the box of rotors and the box is stamped with 'Kommando der Marine Sation Der 021' albeit smudged and difficult to read.

"With both items originating from HMS Mercury I think there can be no doubt the Enigma machine and its spare rotors were originally together.

"We are thrilled to be reuniting them again as they are a key part of our history."

The German military used the Enigma cipher machine during the Second World War to keep their communications secret.

It works using a series of rotating "wheels" or "rotors" to scramble plaintext messages into incoherent ciphertext with billions of combinations possible.

A NMRN spokesman said: "Breaking the Enigma ciphers gave the Allies a key advantage, which, according to historians, shortened the war by two years, thus saving many lives."

It was a brillant piece of kit.And at the beginning of the WW2 we were still using an internationally available pre war system used in the Merchant Navy.

Have they got any code breaking cogs to tell us the truth about the true state of the economy?

Its an Enigma that English history including the peace time and war time and everything in between good or bad is not taught in schools. The fact that the enigma machine was linked to the inception of the things all kids take for granted today such as computers? How can kids know where they are going if they know not from whence they came.

Having this machine may very well have won the war !. As the Germans were very close to producing a functional Atomic Bomb. They already had the Missile delivery capability. The German Aircraft toward the end of the war were vastley supirior to our own and it was just a matter of luck and having this machine that ended the German advance.

"As the Germans were very close to producing a functional Atomic Bomb."

No they weren't.

"The German Aircraft toward the end of the war were vastley supirior to our own..."

Again - no they weren't.

You might be right on the first one Waldo but wrong on the second. The germans have one working jet in production and two others awaiting finalisation. We were well behind them in jet aircraft as were the other allies

Dude you realy do NOT know your history do you !!.

The Germans had a full squadron of ME262 Jet fighter aircraft that could wipe the floor with the best spitfires. However Hitler was blinded by his invasion of Britain Campaign and had them all converted to fast attack bomblers. He he not done this England would have lost its air superiority and could have lost the war.

Here is a You Tube video showing of one of the remaining ME262 Jets flying alongside and ME109

Here is some further information about the Nazi Atomic Bomb Development. Another few months and Hitler would have had a fully functional Atomic Bomb.

as someone who hastened the end of the war by as much as 2 years we are told, shouldn,t he be honoured in israel ,otherwise the complete population of european jews would have been wiped out, shouldn,t he [as a homosextual] be named righteous among gentiles,or perhaps a jewish homosextual should place a tissue in the wailing wall in his honour.

It wasn't Alan Turing who broke the Enigma code. It were three Polish mathematicians in 1932: Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Różycki and Henryk Zygalski. In 1939, when Poland was invaded by Germany, they delivered their findings to the French and British.

Born at the end of WW11, I despair how quickly the issues of then are so quickly forgotten by the people of today. The tragady of man is, the experience of the father cannot be past on to the son.
