Sick Hillsborough Facebook Page Investigated By Police

Hillsborough
Liverpool remembered the 23rd anniversary of the Hillsborough disaster last month

A Facebook page which mocked the Hillsborough football tragedy is being investigated by police.

The page allegedly pointed fun at the deaths of 96 Liverpool fans who were crushed to death at an FA Cup semi-final in 1989.

According to reports, it went online for a week and received 125 "likes" before being removed by Facebook following complaints forwarded by police.

The Liverpool Echo said the page featured a graphic picture showing a supporter pinned up against the Leppings Lane fences at Sheffield Wednesday's stadium.

A Facebook spokesman confirmed that the page had been removed because it violated Facebook's statements of rights and responsibilities.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Police said: "Merseyside Police can confirm that it has received several complaints from members of the public about comments made on Facebook about the Hillsborough tragedy.

"Detectives from the force's hi-tech crime unit and CID are investigating to see if any offence has been committed and if any potential offenders can be identified."

In March, government papers leaked to the BBC showed that former Merseyside Police chief constable Sir Kenneth Oxford blamed drunken Liverpool fans.

A report into the disaster by Lord Justice Taylor, published in 1990, found that the main reason for the disaster was a failure of "police control".

Last month, comedian Alan Davies apologised for comments he made about Liverpool FC's refusal to play on April 15, the anniversary of the tragedy.

Since 2009 an Independent Hillsborough Panel chaired by the Bishop of Liverpool has been overseeing the release of official documents relating to the disaster.

The disclosure of the documents is expected to take place this Autumn.

I remember vividly the day this happened. My late father was at the match and we didn't know if he was involved in the crush or not, thankfully, he was in the next section but he could not get to a phone to let us know he was ok. Watching on tv was torture but at least we got him back late at night, other families were not so lucky.
How anyone could mock the loss of life is totally beyond me. It makes one wonder what sad specimens of humanity would want to do so.

I am not a football fan. I have no axe to grind on this issue. I am sad that so many people died in this tragedy. I do not know who or what was to blame for the deaths of these poor people. What I wanted to say was, how on earth do we stop people writing and posting comments that are viewed by many as sick or depraved or immoral? I question whether such comments are actually illegal. Immoral, nasty, vindictive and crass content doesn't necessarily make them illegal. There is a fine line here between editorial control and state control. The former is sadly necessary given the keyboard cloak of anonymity that some posters hide behind when posting; as indeed is demonstrated on the HP site as well. The latter is breaking dangerous ground unless the comments break the law in any way, such as incitement to violence, threatening language et al. It is a vexed issue and will only get worse as technology progresses.

as some one who has been responsible for the safety of stadiums and appoving them under the Building Regulations and has had to study in detail the Taylor Report and The Safety at Sports Grounds Regs and Act to do so. I resent the moronic comments put on this and other sites regarding Liverpool fans being the cause, which stems from the Sun publications at the time. If you beleive the Murdock press i feel sorry for you.

It was the Police and Stadium design, end of story. I hope the police prosecute any one that says different?

Can I be your friend...if they let me out...

If what you say is true then why not more instances of this 'crowd innocent' event as every other game involves police and stadiums, some of a much worse design than this one! And can you honestly say hand on heart tha a last minute rush of fans who had been drinking, to surge into the crowd was of zero importance.....

commenting from ignorance is not the answer read report or even wikipedia. Taylor spent months studying all the evidence, films, witnesses. The idiot police wouldnt even let ambulances on to the pitch. What hhe said happended is the fact not Sun view, the next day?

the Taylor Report stated that the official cause of the disaster was the failure of police control. Due to the low number of turnstiles, it has been estimated that it would have taken until 3:40 pm to get all ticket holders into the Leppings Lane End had an exit gate not been opened. Gate C was opened to let more fans in, but the total number of fans entering the terrace is not thought to have been more than the capacity of the standing area.

The disaster happened because most of the fans entering the terraces headed for the central pens 3 and 4 as directed by the large notice pointing them that way above the tunnel. Normally a police officer or steward would direct fans away from full pens, but on that day this did not happen. There were no stewards in that area at all. The official capacity of these pens was around 2,000, but the Health and Safety Executive later found that this should have been reduced to around 1,600 as the crush barriers did not conform to the Guide to Safety at Sports Grounds 1986. It is estimated that more than 3,000 people were in these pens shortly after kick off at 3:00 pm. This overcrowding caused the fatal crush.[28][29]

There were accusations that the behaviour of the Liverpool fans contributed to the disaster. These centered around consumption of alcohol before the game and attempts to enter the ground without a ticket.
