Lung Cancer Symptoms
It is hoped Be Clear on Cancer campaign will help save around 1,300 lives a year.

Just one in 10 people realise that a persistent cough could be a key symptom of lung cancer, according to statistics released by the Government as it launches a campaign to raise awareness about the disease.

Despite the condition killing more people than any other form of cancer in England, very few people are aware a cough lasting three weeks is a sign of a potential sufferer.

An advertising drive backed by Ricky Gervais and Lynda Bellingham will be launched tomorrow in a bid to raise awareness about the issue and improve earlier diagnosis in England.

It is hoped Be Clear on Cancer campaign will help save around 1,300 lives a year.

Health Minister Paul Burstow said: "Lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer in this country but worryingly many people don't know the signs and symptoms that could save their lives.

"The earlier lung cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of survival.

"The message from this campaign is simple; if you have a persistent cough for three weeks or more, visit your GP."

Lung cancer affects 33,000 people every year in England with the majority of cases occurring in people over the age of 55.

When diagnosed at its earliest stage, as many as 80% of people are alive five years after diagnosis compared with only seven per cent diagnosed at a late stage.

Professor Sir Mike Richards, National Cancer Director for England, said: "It is vital that cancer patients get treated quickly so they have the best chance of surviving. We have made early diagnosis central to our Cancer Outcomes Strategy.

"Earlier diagnosis of Lung Cancer combined with the best treatments could help save an additional 1,300 lives a year."

Paula Chadwick, chief executive of the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, added: "We really hope people will begin to associate a persistent cough as a symptom of lung cancer, the way they associate a lump as a symptom of breast or testicular cancer."

Omnishambles continues: NHS collapses under weight of perfectly healthy non-smoking 3-week coughers.

Did someone make Theresa May health secretary? The only positive side to that might be that Andrew Lansley had died of a cough.

It's amazed me, that in all these comments, no one has mentioned the amount of doctors, (Gp's and hospital doctors, even specialists) smoke. I was recently in hospital for an operation and at night you'd see the doctors ( and Nurses) going off duty and as soon as their outside, out come the cigarettes. Also the Goverment were very hypocritical when they brought the ban of smoking in public places. They have their 'Club' in Parliment where members can smoke. It comes down to the old saying, 'One law for us and one for them'.

Nearly all hospitals are the same. I've never been to a hospital and not seen Nurses and doctors coming out and lighting up.

If smoking was banned all you NHS scroungers wouldnt be able to get treated ... if the smokers didnt pay to keep the NHS afloat you scroungers would be wondering whether to give your fat bellies and bingo wings a few more pounds with a double scooby burger or pay to get the docotor to look at you.

What the UK needs is all you fatties removed and sent to Planet FatFk

When are we going to see a total ban on smoking in public places. Any town, any where in UK you find inconsiderate smokers puffing away out side offices, restaurants etc on the public foot paths etc. Why should all of us non smokers be subjected to clouds of smoke in public places. If they want to smoke let them smoke in their homes.

It's a pity Health Minister Paul Burstow doesn't care enough to have the chemical taken out of cigerettes. we are being killed by a government who doesn't care or is to stupid to know!
09:24 AM on 05/08/2012
No we're being affected by inconsiderate smokers who smoke in public. Would be brilliant if smoking was banned totally in public places. If they want to smoke then that is their choice but not where it affects other people because they then don't have a choice its just inflicted on them.
10:55 AM on 05/08/2012
That wasn't what I said, I was complaining about the use of terrible chemical in cigerettes. I don't smoke and I am not condoning smoking in public places. I am nearly sixty, in my day one could obtain tobacco without chemicals, but now it is impossible. How dare they say it the persons fault!!! also who has the right to tell another person what they can do, are we a facist state, pretty much so.

This is why nobody really listens anymore ... the people of the UK over the past few years have began to see through lies for the first time in their lives ... generations have followed the call of leaders in their country ... but no more.

These people of this once proud nation ONCE AGAIN stand together STRONG as their fore fathers did on the great battle fields ... THE GREAT PEOPLE OF THE UNITED KINGDOM ... stand United in their Kingdom and say NO !! we do not permit doctors and MP's to take our lives for more money their pooches.

The people speak, the people talk around camp fires, children run to towns close by and spread the news ... NO MORE TAXES FROM GOVERMENT AND NO MORE RUBBISH DOCTORS.

I am a Medic and often dismayed by how everyone is always so eager to roll their eyes at doctors, the NHS and the general 'incompetence' of the health service without actually knowing the first thing about how complex some of these diagnoses are.

Lets take the example of 'cough' as a presenting symptom. The differential (medical jargon for all the conditions that are known to cause a given symptom) for this is, as you can imagine, an incredibly long list. Cancer is one of those differentials and in the VAST majority of cases of cough that a doctor sees, it is NOT CANCER. Every time a doctor assesses a patient with cough he/she has to weigh up the likelihood of it being something nasty as opposed to something benign - with the latter being much more statistically likely. To add to the complexity - cancers can easily present in a highly atypical fashion - some people never even have a cough.

For these reasons, diagnoses are always easy in hindsight but making the right diagnoses at the right time is sometimes highly elusive - even for the best and brightest. These issues are often much more complex than the media wants you to think. Can you imagine the furore that would be caused if every doctor turned around to every patient who came in with a cough and told them they might have cancer?

Well said crumpets! People will always look at something from the outside and think they know how it works and comment accordingly. Usually, when you get these people to spend a day, a week etc doing the said job they are aghast as to how much more is involved and how more difficult it is than they imgained. It is human nature sadly and worse in the hands of those lacking in compassion, empathy and forethought. Something can often be seen to be simplistic for the expertise of those demonstrating, so well done you and yours in the trade! I know your hands are restricted by government policies and the job is made more difficult for you because of this. Fan No.20 ;)

even if you go to your dr with your persistent cough you are likely to be told its nothing - I've been interviewing people on health for years now and every lung cancer case i find has been diagnosed too late anyway.

I suspect that more people die in NHS hospital through neglect and starvation than die of lung cancer!

Its shocking how they treat pensioners in this country. Doctors think that the money could be better spent elsewhere (on the young). Following WW2, the politiciansy went on about building a country fit for heros.

The reality is that defenceless old poeople are being robbed and killed in their homes and ignored when they get to hospital or end up in nursing homes where they get bullied and beaten up by the staff .

Doctors in the UK who cant find cancer after the woman was checked over twenty times need sacked first then jailed with no release ever ... the UK gave them free hands out for years while they were scrounging from the UK to get put through college ... they took our money to train and do the job which it seems most cant do.

I want these doctors to pay back what they took ... if they cant do their job then get rid of them, their incompetence is killing people.

Although my mum died nearly 8 years ago of Emphysema( smoking related), she did have lung cancer twice, once in each lung. She also had a wedge resection, and was given all clear 2 years after each op, but her slight cough and weezing detected other problems, she was on breathing apparatous until she died.. I do not smoke, but have been concerned about my cough, and spoke to my doctor with different symtems i had, she then listened( which i might add is sometimes rare in dr's these days). I had 6 different tests over 2 months, to be told i have Scleroderma, but had i not thought of my mums illness i would never have gone to get treatment at all. My lung is damaged which i had chemo for 6 months, and since been on tablet form medication which i will always have to take, all i have said to my family is dont ignore medical issues as however small you might think they are it could if treated save your life, as with mine if not treated 4 yrs ago might have seriously damaged my lung..

Well done and very lucky your ok ... on this rare time the doctor has listened to you, but for others they dont want to know all problems, they cant connect syptoms very often so play safe by only taking little bits of info so they can hide behind that when all goes wrong ...

ah sorry but i didnt have all those parts of info to diagnose the problem they say, or they say ah its just one of those things that happen.

".......dont ignore medical issues as however small you might think they are it could if treated save your life, as with mine if not treated 4 yrs ago might have seriously damaged my lung...."
Yes, I suspect we 'make excuses' for suspicious symptoms, hoping they will go away....
Don't become a hyperchondriac, (did I spell that right ?!),
but use common sense to tell when something is different from normal.
No excuse now if you have 'The Net' ! Loads of info' at the click of a mouse.
I always think that lungs are such delicate and amazing organs, it's incredible that anyone should ever start smoking.
thank goodness 'a13all' had the sense to pursue the condition and save later damage.
Hope you are still well.
09:23 PM on 05/08/2012
yes doing ok thanks, blood test is done every month to check condition, have 4 monthly check ups so if any changes they do more tests.. I do feel very lucky that my doctor and concultant listened to my worries if my cough got worse, had xray done, lung funtion test just to be sure. After what happened to my mum, feel my life is so special and want to enjoy it!
