McDonald's Launch Kid-Friendly ‘Five-A-Day Drink'

Five A Day Drink

A fizzy drink that promises children one of their five-a-day portions of fruit and vegetables, will go on sale in McDonald's from next week.

New drink 'Fruitizz' will be served at the counter from May 16, alongside other soft drink staples, in response to research by the company that found children found this "more exciting and desirable".

As part of the fast food giant's efforts to improve the health credentials of its children's meals, the drink contains no added sugars, artificial colours or flavours and blends 60% fruit juice from grapes, apples and raspberries with natural sparkling water.

McDonald's chief executive and president Jill McDonald said: "For the past three years, we have been working hard behind the scenes to create a fizzy drink that is unlike anything else currently available in high street restaurants.

"We tried and tested 80 formulations in order to create the right product that delivers nutritional benefit as well as a new, exciting taste."

The new drink follows the introduction of carrot sticks, fruit bags, mineral water and organic semi-skimmed milk to McDonald's Happy Meal menu.

Children's Food Campaign spokesman Malcolm Clark said: "It's encouraging to see companies like McDonald's making it easier for parents to make healthier choices for their children.

"The best news for children's health will be if fruit-based drinks start to displace sugary drinks such as Coca-Cola from children's menus in McDonald's."

Sasha Watkins, a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, added that although it was great to see healthier alternatives to soft drinks being made available, parents should remember that fruit juice - while being high in nutrients such as Vitamin C - is also full of sugar.

"Only one 150ml glass of unsweetened 100% fruit or vegetable juice can count towards our five a day. Water is still the best drink choice for both children and adults."

Richard Laming, media director of the British Soft Drinks Association, also cautioned against expecting too much from health-targeted products.

"The soft drinks market is fast-moving, dynamic and always open to new, innovative products. New drinks can survive if consumers like them, but if they don’t find a following, they won’t last.

"It’s consumer taste that shapes the market."

  • How To Be A Positive Parent

Tips on how to instill good behaviour in your child from an early age by using the 'positive discipline' approach, as advocated by the <a href="http://www.nspcc.org.uk/help-and-advice/for-parents-and-carers/positive-parenting/encouraging-better-behaviour/encouraging-better-behaviour_wda72886.html#positive_parenting_and_positive_discipline" target="_hplink"><strong>National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty for Children</strong></a> (<strong>NSPCC</strong>).

  • Show The Love

You can never spoil your child by showing them too much love. Boost their self-esteem by making them feel cherished, safe and special.

  • Have Clear Rules

Have clear simple rules and limits. Your child needs to know what the boundaries are, what is and is not acceptable. Keep it simple to avoid confusion and concentrate on behaviour that really matters.

  • Praise Good Behaviour

Praise good behaviour that you want to encourage and chances are, your child will repeat this as they know there's a reward at the end of it.

  • Ignore Bad Behaviour

If you ignore behaviour you don't like, it is less likely to be repeated by your child. Make it clear that you're open to communication when they are behaving, but not when they are being naughty or disruptive.

  • Avoid Direct Criticism

Rather than telling your child off for being bad, identify what they have done wrong and criticise the behaviour instead. Direct criticism can cause your child to go into their shell and become shy and withdrawn.

  • Show The Signs

Be as demonstrative as possible. Sweep her off her feet and praise her to when she's been a good girl. She'll remember how happy it makes her feel and make her want to be good again.

  • Step In

If it looks as though your child's behaviour is starting to deteriorate, step in before things go wrong. Redirect them to another activity to avoid conflict. Acknowledge your child's feelings by saying, 'I know you are cross" but make it clear that it doesn't go beyond that point.

  • Let Go of Control

Children need to learn about dealing with choices and decision-making. Don't impose your decisions on them all the time, let them have their say on little things and gradually increase this as they get older.

  • Never Be Threatening

Never use threats or physical behaviour, as this will only make the situation worse. Negotiate solutions when there is a disagreement and remember to communicate to help dissolve the problem. This way, your child will end up understanding what went wrong and why you are upset with them.

  • Set A Good Example

It's vital for parents to be positive role models for their child and practice what they preach. Actions speak louder than words. Let your child see that rules apply to everyone in the family, not just him or her.

Nothing wrong with coca cola, greta for drains. Our GP once recommended coca cola for our son's upset tummy, it worked. The only problem, as with anything is excess. My motto is excess in moderation. You can go over the top with something but not every day. You can get drunk, but not every day, you can smoke, but not all the time, you can eat fast food but not every day. It isn't difficult. I bet if this macdonalds drink was analysed it would be 100% out of a chemical plant rather than a real plant.

Coca cola is also good for cleaning jewellery and old coins. It is amazing to watch what it does and the dirt just coming off. Mind you, Gin is equally as good at cleaning jewellery, but a bit of a waste - better with tonic, ice and a slice!!

I quite agree, excess in moderation, but there are people who don't have anything else but fast food and fizzy drinks.

I know, the worst I ever saw in a supermarket was a young mum with her kid sitting on the trolley. She was in front of me in the queue, all she had in the trolley were piles and piles of tesco value sausages, those horrible little pink things that look like...That must have been their weeks supply of food, it was so sad. The problem is that raw material food is more expensive than prepared ready meals, so people go for the ready meals, microwave them, the kids eat up in their bedroom and the adults eat on the sofa. I have no idea why cooking programmes are so popular, nobody seems to do it apart from me! Society is diseased.

If we all loved, we could all live.

To eat any fruit or drink full fruit drinks are all full of natural sugar. All slimming foods and drinks have more added sugar than normal. As a diabetic it is hard to find something you can eat or drink without paying three or four times the amount.

eat only fruit and veg, dont drink, dont smoke, dont drive, dont fly, dont use this dont do that, jog or work out in a gym all day and always practice safe sex, you may live long but what a horrible journey you will take, or you could eat what you want, drink what you want, enjoy yourself, live life to the full and enjoy the journey.............mmmmmmmmmmm.

Well said. After all of what you say the government then turn round and say we are living too long! They should encourage people to enjoy themselves and die younger. Who wants to rot in a care home anyway, when everyone you care about has passed away.

I love that people jump on their high horse and assume that people who eat fast food haveno idea about nutrition and can't cook. These are people who never consume anything for fun? Never eat chocolate? Don't drink? Smoke? I take my kids to fast food joints occaisionally, we sit down, laugh and joke, not keen myself but the kids like it. It's cool apparantly. I can cook from scratch and do most nights, and i know about nutrition. I also know how to enjoy myself occasionally.
06:15 PM on 05/09/2012
I too know how to enjoy myself, and our son has never been inside any 'fast food' outlet ~ his choice, not ours.

To have to go to somewhere like this to be 'cool' is very sad indeed. What is this need to be seen to be cool, anyway? Anyone who is secure in themselves does not worry what the masses think of them; they are more concerned with their true friends and getting on with life.

Taken from AOL Home page

"McDonald's launches five-a-day drink
But can you guess how much sugar it contains?"

But then you read the story & it says nothing about how much sugar it contain's.

Total dribble from the huffingtonpost again.

fizzy drinks contian sugar no matter what else they claim to do ,people are victims of PR bs and buy it just because 'it must be good if they say so ' to rehydrate and keep your body working ,good old H20 is all you need ( it's a lot kinder to your teeth as well )
02:23 PM on 05/09/2012
It's sad to say, but I suspect that if this company launched a 'Poo' burger the chavs that frequent these place would still buy it.
05:59 PM on 05/09/2012
I think if only "chavs" went to McDonald's they'd go out of business very fast...
06:17 PM on 05/09/2012
Having had to walk past these places in the past, and having seen in the clientèle through the window, I believe that I was being generous calling them 'Chavs'.
01:34 PM on 05/09/2012
Well do Macs.... double large fries with that order please.
01:24 PM on 05/09/2012
There`s nothing wrong with sugars and fats,as long as its in moderation.
02:54 PM on 05/09/2012
You tell that to all the people who thought they werent bad for them, but now have diabetes, bad teeth, etc!
All sugars and fats that are not naturally occurring in nature are bad for the body.
The 'everything in moderation' was yet another BS line that the jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none GP's used to spout out.
04:35 PM on 05/09/2012
Here here, couldn't have said it better myself. The masses have been brainwashed. This is why obesity is so high in this country, coupled with lack of exercise.

Rubbish! Everything in moderation is fine, even heroin, everything has its own standard of what can be described as moderation. people get bad teeth because they don't clean them, genetics, or the area they live.
05:12 PM on 05/09/2012
Sugar no good if you are diabetic, as for fats assume that's why you go by the name Mr Beefy?
05:50 PM on 05/09/2012
So we are all diabetic,if your diabetic you stay away from sweet foods and drink, you knob. 57"chest,34" waist,23" biceps, etc, etc.Thats beefy.
