Grooming Trial

A gang of nine men who groomed white girls as young as 13 with drink and drugs were driven by "lust and greed", a judge said on Wednesday as the group's sentences were delivered.

The men heard their sentencing at Liverpool Crown Court after being convicted yesterday of conspiracy to engage in sexual activity with children under the age of 16 and other offences.

The group of nine received 118 years worth of sentencing in total, however some of the sentences will be run concurrently.

The man seen as the ringleader, a 59-year-old who cannot be named for legal reasons, was jailed for a total of 19 years for conspiracy, two counts of rape, aiding and abetting a rape, sexual assault and a count of trafficking within the UK for sexual exploitation.

The defendant was previously banned from court because of his threatening behaviour and for calling the judge a "racist bastard".

Takeaway worker Kabeer Hassan, 25, of Lacrosse Avenue, Oldham, Greater Manchester, was jailed for nine years for rape and three years, concurrently, for the conspiracy conviction.

The 59-year-old ordered the first victim to have sex with Hassan as a "treat" for his birthday. He raped the girl, who was then aged 15.

Taxi driver Abdul Aziz, 41, of Armstrong Hurst Close, Rochdale, was sentenced to nine years for conspiracy and nine years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Married father-of-five and religious studies teacher Abdul Rauf, 43, of Darley Road, Rochdale, was jailed for six years for conspiracy and six years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Rauf, who teaches at a local mosque, asked a 15-year-victim if she had any younger friends and would drive some of the girls to other men, who would use them for sex, despite knowing they were underage.

Mohammed Sajid, 35, of Jepheys Street, Rochdale, was sentenced to 12 years for rape, six years for conspiracy, one year for trafficking and six years, all concurrent, for sexual activity with a child.

Adil Khan, 42, of Oswald Street, Rochdale, was given eight years for conspiracy and eight years, concurrently, for trafficking for sexual exploitation.

Khan, who is married with one child, fathered the child of a 13-year-old victim who believed she was in love with him.

Mohammed Amin, 45, of Falinge Road, Rochdale, was sentenced to five years for conspiracy and 12 months, concurrently, for sexual assault. Amin is known to be married with school-aged children.

Taxi driver Abdul Qayyum, 44, of Ramsay Street, Rochdale, was jailed for five years for conspiracy.

Philip Boyd, defending, said of his client: "He is a hard-working man of significant character in his community."

Illegal immigrant Hamid Safi, 22, of no fixed address, was jailed for four years for conspiracy and one year, concurrently, for trafficking.

why cant the ring leader be named for legal reasons?

If Nick Griffin was talking to jury he deserves to locked up with lot for many years along with the jury folk talking to him?
07:26 AM on 05/10/2012
Possibly the 59 year old can't be named because he has further proceedings against him in the near future. Just a guess.

The solicitor for Adil Khan, one of the convicted men, said an appeal would be lodged.

Alias Yousaf claimed outside court that jury deliberations had been "breached".

He claimed comments on Twitter by the far-right group Infidels of Great Britain and the leader of the British National Party, Nick Griffin, showed they knew the men would be found guilty before the verdicts were delivered.

Mr Yousaf said: "We are left with no option but to conclude that the confidentiality of the jury's deliberations must have been breached."

Society failed the girls in this case and now that failure is being blamed on a weak minority group”

Simon Nichol, defending

On behalf of the ringleader

Earlier the 59-year-old leader of the sex ring, who cannot be named for legal reasons but was also convicted of two rapes, aiding and abetting rape, sexual assault and trafficking for the purposes of sexual exploitation, was jailed for 19 years.

His defence barrister, Simon Nichol, said his client "has objected from the start for being tried by an all white jury and subsequent events have confirmed his fears".

"He believes his convictions have nothing to do with justice but result from the faith and the race of the defendants.

"He further believes that society failed the girls in this case before the girls even met them and now that failure is being blamed on a weak minority

Now, right here we see a crystal clear example of the exploitation of good will of the british people on the grounds of race .
The only "infidel" here is the very mentallity that these young girls were already vulnerable so their actions of sickening abuse did not warrant punishment .
If that is grounds for appeal then our Justice system is nothing more than a ridiculous circus .

The sentances are a joke, should have been much much longer, and do we get to deport this scum on their release ?
12:33 AM on 05/10/2012
Excuse me for being racist!! I wasn't until they burnt our poppies and spat at our squaddies. If I admit I am racist!! happen's now?? do I sit here and wait to be arrested??
12:17 AM on 05/10/2012
Why has the ninth man not been named??? Why is he being kept secret???
06:01 AM on 05/10/2012
stupid british law, that,s why.
10:24 PM on 05/09/2012
I really disagree with all the sentences being run concurrently - they should all have to serve the full term.
10:00 PM on 05/09/2012
they all violated childern everyone of them should have been hung end of story and a lesson to others
06:53 AM on 05/10/2012
But its their human right to do so .............................. just watch that one get an airing when we try to deport this filth
07:33 AM on 05/10/2012
And how much will it cost to keep this lot in Jail? I can think of a cheaper option----------------
09:42 PM on 05/09/2012
An utter disgrace. I heard on the BBC news that they had to have translators in court. Also one of the girls tried to raise the alarm four years ago but was ignored because she was thought to be racist. And where are we going to keep all these people (of all races) who are given long prison sentences? We need to send these men back to Pakistan. They sully the reputation of those of their fellow countrymen who lead decent lives in our country.
09:35 PM on 05/09/2012
The police say race and religion played no part. They are liars. I don't want this to become a big race problem but being dishonest and holding back on the truth because of political correctness is worrying in the extreme.

The police in this country have become politicised in left-liberal politics when they should be neutral. They have become like state police from the former Eastern Bloc enforcing the prevailing political ideology of the time.
10:11 PM on 05/09/2012
the police who say that race played no part in this case - SHOULD GET THE SACK - they know thats alie
08:52 PM on 05/09/2012
vote bnp if you want to do something about this
09:26 PM on 05/09/2012
What will they do like. I'd sooner have the criminals we currently have than the BNP.
12:46 AM on 05/10/2012
then you're a complete and utter disgrace, and incredibly ignorant..what chance have we got.........................

says it all about a certain ethnic minority, nothing but trouble. when will we ALL be brave enough to openly condem such rubbish
10:27 PM on 05/09/2012
No it does not say anything about their race/religion. There are many hardworking, honest citizens in this country who are of the same race and religion, it is an insult to those people to group them all together in such a way.

appeasement again, wait till its one of your family or friends and then we will see what your feelings are. The religion of peace and all its perverted teachings is a disease and should be erradicated from our land
