Facebook Hacker Gareth Crosskey Jailed For One Year

Man Jailed For A Year For Hacking Facebook Account

A young man has been jailed for a year for hacking into a Facebook account.

Gareth Crosskey targeted the account of a US citizen, prompting the breach to be reported to the FBI.

The 21-year-old, from West Sussex, admitted computer misuse offences and was sentenced at Southwark Crown Court, police said.

Detectives from the Metropolitan Police's e-crime unit launched an investigation after he hacked into the account on January 12 last year, also gaining access to the victim's private email.

The Met got involved after the FBI traced the culprit to the UK and Crosskey was arrested at his home on July 14 last year.

Computers and other storage devices were recovered from his address.

A Met spokesman said: "Today's result should act as a deterrent to any individuals thinking of participating in this type of criminal activity.

"By taking swift action, police central e-crime unit officers were able to quickly detain Crosskey, thereby preventing further disruption to the victim."
