Diamond Jubilee: Queen Sofia Of Spain Snubs Royal Lunch Invite

Queen Sofia

Queen Sofia of Spain will not be attending a lunch to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee amid a row over Gibraltar, it has been reported.

The Spanish government ordered the royal to decline an invitation to Friday's event at Windsor Castle.

El Pais newspaper in Spain said the snub was in response to a forthcoming trip to Gibraltar by Prince Edward.

Earlier this year Spanish prime minister Mariano Rajoy raised Madrid's long-standing demand for the return of Gibraltar during talks with David Cameron.

But Cameron told him that there was no change in the UK's position that the Mediterranean outpost should remain British.
Buckingham Palace has not published a list of invitees to the lunch and a spokesman declined to comment.

The event has already triggered protests as it is expected to include some controversial monarchs.

The lunch at Windsor Castle, hosted by the Queen, will also be attended by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Duke of York and Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex.

Guests are expected to include Swaziland's King Mswati III, who is accused of leading a lavish lifestyle while his people go hungry.

Another controversial figure expected to attend is Bahrain's King Hamad Al-Khalifa, whose country is in a state of civil unrest.

Yesterday, a group of Swazis living in the UK protested outside London's luxurious Savoy Hotel, where King Mswati is said to be staying with an entourage of more than 30 people ahead of the Windsor gathering.

Swaziland Vigil, which organised the protest, stages regular demonstrations outside the Swaziland High Commission in London.

Co-ordinator Thobile Gwebu said people in the country had been reduced to eating cow dung to make sure they filled their stomachs when taking Aids medicines provided by aid agencies.

Gwebu said Swazis in the UK did not want to spoil the Queen's Jubilee celebrations and had written to her, asking her to influence the king.

The King of Bahrain's presence at the lunch is also expected to prompt controversy after pro-democracy protesters in the country were met with violent reprisals from police.

Last month, organisers of the Bahrain Grand Prix were urged to cancel the race amid concerns of human rights abuses, but it went ahead.

Bahrain's crown prince, Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, pulled out of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's wedding last year amid controversy over human rights.

Campaign groups compared the visit by the king to a visit from Libyan and Iraqi dictators Colonel Gaddafi or Saddam Hussein.

"What would the British citizens feel if Gaddafi or Saddam was invited for the Queen's lunch?," said a spokesman.

Why dont the British government give Gibraltar there full independence. Then stop the issuing of British passports to them with immediate effect. Slowly the Rock will return to Spanish hands. Look at Hong Kong, worth an absolute fortune and one of the worlds biggest market players. How much is Gibraltar worth now and when the border is shut again. Virtually all of the Hong Kong residents wanted to remain British and that was still handed back. The Gibraltarians have a lot of maturing to do if they are going to have an ammicable hand over. I still beleive they stupidly think it wont happen. Its merely a matter of time.

Hong Kong was leased to the British in 1898 for a period of 99 years. They were legally obligated to hand it back.

Gibraltar has been a British territory in perpetuity since 1713.

There is no logical comparison to be made between the expiry of the lease of Hong Kong, and the Spanish claim for Gibraltar.

Very wrong. Uk were only obliged. They purposely avoided a referendum for the population as they wanted to remain British. Then the UK government would have to re negotiate. The UK gave it away with 6.4 million people wanting to be British. There are only 33000 in Gib yet we still handed it back. Honk Kongs GDP was 300billion$ at time of habdover, Gibs is 1billion$! yet we still handed it back. If you think that there is no comparison and the UK government wont ever sign it over, how come Tony Blair actually signed the papers and handed them to the Spanish government in 2002 for joint soveriegnty? The only reason it isnt half spanish now is that spanish hardliners wanted it all. Do your research next time. Gib is going its just a matter of time.

Queen Sofia did not snub us. The Spanish government did, because we won't give them Gibraltar. According to the news today, Spanish Banks are in trouble, and a bail out for Spain is looking inevitable. I assume that when they have decided how much they want, the Spanish government will be proud enough (again because we won't give them Gibraltar) to accept any of our dirty money. I suspect however it will be a case of dream on gringo.

Well I just hope the HuffPost will keep on printing porky pies like this. I went out to a meeting in darkest Spain tonight and told my friends that Queen Sophia had refused to come to the Queen's diamond jubilee lunch over Gibraltar and when they had stopped laughing they bought me lots of beer and asked me if this is what is meant by Murdoch standards of journalism. There is, apparently, some difference of opinion over fishing but maybe we shouldn't talk about that as it wouldn't make nearly so exciting a story. Nothing like a bit of neo-fascism, snubbed Queens, democracy at peril, British Empire at bay for that extra touch of profit.

I see what you mean; I was aware that H. Post news articles were not, er shall we say the originals, and we all know how things can change when written second hand.I agree with you, that unless you are J.R. Hartley you may not find an article on fishing very rivetting but perhaps H. post would do better sticking to that angle (No pun intended)

I tried to go to Greece several times, they just kept putting the price up so I still haven't been. We always end up in Spain where they have the sense to drop the price of a beer to attract custom, unlike in greece (as far as I have been told) where they charge 10 euros a pint.

Let's just face facts. Gibralter is a smoke screen. The real reason Queen Sofia cannot attend the royal get-together is that Spain can't afford her plane ticket. Economic collapse aside, the costs of maintaining Ceuta and Melita keep rising. Smoke, smoke, smoke.

She could always fly Ryanair to stansted and then get the train.

Had she posed in the official birthday photo I reckon that it would have resulted in quite a few broken lenses.

Spain wants Gibraltar. Funny that Spain, can keep Ceuta and Mellila in North Africa as forced enclaves, but Gibraltar, ceded to the UK by the Treaty of Utrecht over 300 years ago MUST be returned.

During the Falklands war Spain made it very difficult for the overladen Hercs, using Gibraltars short runway to take off safely. Seems Argentina still has friends in Spain! Both the democratic votes of people living in Gibraltar and the Falklands are being ignored. Still Spain and Argentina have both had Fascist dictators within the past 40 years so what else would we expect when we talk about democratic rights!

Most Spanish people couldn't care less about Gibraltar, believe me! On the other hand of course people in Gibraltar don't want to belong to Spain, because that would mean that they would have to pay taxes.
The queen Sofia should go back to her homeland and leave as alone!

Spain does not want the rock, what Spain does want is to be able to use the waters around the rock (which according to the original treaty belong to Spain) for fishing without the Royal Navy flushing them out. That is the root of the conflict, the rest is just stupid jingoism on both sides.

It would be a great pleasure giving you Sofía as well as a special present! Well, actually it is not a good idea, because I love the UK so much!

I have just read a Spanish report that says the clinching factor in the government "suggesting" to the Spanish Royal Household that their Queen should not attend our Queen's Jubilee bash was the fact that the band of the Gibraltar regiment will be playing at te said bash. How pathetic can you get.

The current ruling party in Spain, the right wing "Partido Popular", has always taken a much more aggressive line in relation to Gibraltar than the opposition PSOE.

That it was going to do its best to escalate the Gibraltar dispute was pretty clear from its first days in power, with their foreign minister boorishly shouting "Gibraltar is Spanish" at a UK MEP.

This development is not particularly surprising, and is consistent with other hostile moves by the "Partido Popular", such as abandoning the "tripartite forum" discussions, aimed at improving relations between Gibraltar and its Spanish neighbours, deliberately increasing waiting times and delays at the Gibraltar border, and by threatening to send Spanish military patrol boats in to Gibraltar territorial waters in order to prevent the Gibraltar police from enforcing fishery conservation rules against Spanish fishermen. The last of these risks causing a serious confrontation between the Spanish "Guardia Civil" and the Royal Gibraltar Police.

Why are they doing this? Why deliberately escalate a dispute which had cooled down significantly under the PSOE government? Could the right wing government be trying to emulate the Argentinian tactic of warming up the Falklands dispute in order to distract from internal problems?

If so, its a sad indication that the Spanish right still has not moved on from the days of Francoite propaganda, as this was a favourite Franco tactic.

The "Partido Popular" was started by Fascists who realised after Franco the dictatorship could not survive and to keep power they changed the name of the party that had got to power by revolt and stayed in power by terror and murder.

The PP should start thinking about a "real" way of seeing the light at the end of this economic crisis instead of discussing about Gibraltar. If the people from there don't want to belong to Spain they have their right to decide it. Lucky them by the way, as a Galician I don't want to be part of Spain and I don't have a choice!

I was in Gib last summer, seems the Spanish have already taken over as many Spanish people cross the border everyday to work in Gib.

If it were Queen Sofia choice to attend she probably would. Its the Spanish Government who have told her not to attend.

Yet again Huff has managed to twist the headlines and give the wrong immpression to readers. One wonders if Huff is part of News International.
