Papple: The Pear Disguised As An Apple To Go On Sale Next Week

A fruit so new it is yet to be named, but described as a pear disguised as an apple, is to go on sale in the UK next week.

Marks and Spencer says the fruit - dubbed a "papple" - looks and tastes like an apple but has the skin and texture of a pear, and is a member of the pear family.

It is being referred to, catchily, as the T109 until its official name is decided, a spokeswoman said.

T109 is grown in New Zealand and is a cross between European and Asian pear varieties, which resulted in a fruit similar to an apple, the retailer said.

M&S fruit expert Shazad Rehman said: "This is one of the most exciting new varieties of fruit we have seen for several years.

"We know our customers like to try new and interesting fruit and we hope this will be something they will really enjoy."

M&S hopes to grow the pear in the UK from 2015.

T109 will be available in M&S stores from next week priced at ÂŁ1 each.

Chinese pears have been on sale for years, and they look like apples - nothing new here.

It has the taste of an apple but the skin and texture of a pear - in other words a mushy apple. I could buy apples past their best for a fraction of the price - hardly that exciting!

Nothing new about hybrids. I recently saw plumcots on sale recently and not knowing what they are I looked them up and found this on Wiki:

"Pluots, apriums, apriplums, or plumcots, are some of the hybrids between different Prunus species that are also called interspecific or IS plums

Natural plumcots/apriplums have been known for hundreds of years from regions of the world that grow both plums and apricots from seed."
