New Zealand Sunset, Auckland Skies Shared Via Twitter (PICTURES)

Twitter Users Share Stunning New Zealand Sunset (PICTURES)

A stunning sunset bathed the skies above Auckland, New Zealand, yesterday, with Twitter users sharing the spectacular scenes.

The horizon was painted in a riot of purples, pinks and oranges, with the New Zealand Herald describing it as one of the country's "finest early winter sunsets".

According to Wikipedia, the colours of a sunset are caused by white rays of light travelling through the atmosphere, becoming scattered out of the beam by air molecules and airborne particles.

Shorter wavelengths such as blue and green scatter more strongly, preferentially removing them from the beam. Orange and red hues have a longer wavelength, hence their dominance.
