Former Republican presidential candidate Senator John McCain has defended an aide to US secretary of state Hillary Clinton, after they were accused of being part of a conspiracy by the Muslim Brotherhood infiltrate the US government.
In a speech on the floor of the US Senate, McCain said State Department rounded on the "ugly and unfortunate attacks" on State Department official Huma Abedin by fellow republicans including congresswomen Michele Bachmann.
"These allegations about Huma and the report from which they are drawn are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable woman, a dedicated American and a loyal public servant," he said.
