Athletics Official Killed By Javelin At Competition

A 75-year-old athletics official has died after being speared in the throat with a javelin during a competition in Dusseldorf, Germany.

The spear pierced his carotid artery and though attended to by paramedics, he later died in hospital, reported AFP.

The javelin was still flying through the air when the official at the Wilhelm Unger Games made a move to measure the throw, according to local media reports.

"He was hit in the head, in the cheek, and also sustained a wound to his carotid artery," Michael Sandforth, spokesman for the Düsseldorf fire department told The Local on Sunday.

Around 300 adults and children were taking part in the competition and the javelin thrower was only 17, according to Eurosport. The seven people who witnessed the throw were given counselling.

The man was only identified Dieter S, due to German media rules.
