Damian Green: 'Theresa Locked Them Up, And Ken Let Them Out'

'Theresa Locks Them Up, And Ken Let Them Out'

David Cameron was accused of "lurching to the right" in his recent cabinet reshuffle after he (sort of) fired Ken Clarke as justice secretary, replacing him with the more right-wing Chris Grayling.

Addressing Conservative members at the party's conference in Birmingham today, policing minister Damian Green seized the chance to take a jab at the Tory Big Beast who was often described as the sixth Lib Dem in the cabinet.

"I'm a minister in both the Home Office and the Ministry of Justice and part of my job is to help the two departments work smoothly together," Green said.

"In previous times both Theresa and Ken used to point out how well they worked together: Theresa locked them up and Ken let them out.

He added, joking: "Under the new regime I discover it's a bit different: Theresa locks them up and Chris throws away the key."
