A Disney cruise had a decidedly non-fairytale ending on Friday after it ran into high seas and gale force winds from Hurricane Sandy.

As the cruise passed Miami, Florida, the adverse weather caused the vessel to rock dangerously and flooded much of the ship.

Dr David Evans, a passenger on board with his wife told CNN: "There was a moment in the night where they ship tilted so far to the right that the furniture moved across our room.

"If you think about how far a thirteen story ship has to tilt for furniture to move, it says a lot."

Passengers were told by the captain to stay inside their rooms until they had passed through the edge of the storm.

Hurricane Sandy continues to cause problems for mariners at is approaches the US mainland.

The US Coast Guard is currently responding to a distress call from a 180-foot, three-mast ship called HMS Bounty which is stranded in waters approximately 160 miles west of the eye of storm.

The ship was taking on water and is unable to move.

The coast guard later confirmed it had been informed that the 17-person crew had abandoned ship.

"The 17-person crew donned cold water survival suits and lifejackets before launching in two 25-man lifeboats with canopies," the coast guard sai
