Apple: 40 Billion Apps Downloaded From iOS App Store

Apple Reaches Enormous App Store Milestone

Apple has announced that more than 40 billion apps have been downloaded from its iOS App Store.

The milestone was reached after 20 billion apps were downloaded in 2012 alone.

That number excludes re-downloads and updates, Apple said.

In total more than 775,000 apps are available for the devices, and there are more than 500 million active accounts.

Apple said it had paid developers "over seven billion dollars" in profits from App Store sales.

"It has been an incredible year for the iOS developer community," said Eddy Cue, Apple's senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.

"Developers have made over seven billion dollars on the App Store, and we continue to invest in providing them with the best ecosystem so they can create the most innovative apps in the world."

Apple only passed 30 billion apps downloaded in June 2012, and their rate of growth is still accelerating, despite the apparent saturation of iPads and iPhones in many developed markets.
