Cardinals are meeting in the Vatican City to choose the next Roman Catholic pope.

There is no obvious front-runner, but whoever they pick has a mighty job on his hands, with the Catholic Church facing more upheaval and uncertainty than it has seen in decades.

The cardinals will be locked away in absolute secrecy as they try to reach a decision.

They even disguise their handwriting to maintain the intrigue. Eventually, the ballot papers are tied together and burned - with onlookers watching for the white smoke to indicate a decision has been reached.
