A baby boy has been rescued after being dumped inside the drain of a building in Spain, according to reports.

Sky News said the two-day-old's mother had been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder in the east coast city of Alicante.

She is 26 years old, Spain's Interior Ministry said.

The AP news agency said the baby, who weighed 2.1kg, was in a "serious but not life-threatening" condition in hospital in Alicante, had a fractured bone in one arm, and was found wrapped in plastic bags.

His umbilical cord was still attached and he had been trapped where the building's drains converged into a manhole.

Last month a baby boy was found stuck inside a sewage pipe in China.
