Police are hunting a convicted murderer who has absconded from an open prison.

Craig Black, who was jailed for life in 1995, left HMP Leyhill in South Gloucestershire yesterday.

He had only been transferred to the prison this month.

Avon and Somerset Police are warning the public not to approach Black.

"He was last seen at 4.45pm yesterday afternoon," a spokesman said.

"There was a further check at 8.30pm when it was discovered that he was missing."

Police said Black has links with Marlborough, Wiltshire and Birmingham.

"We are keen to trace him and would urge anyone spotting him to contact us on 999," the spokesman said.

"We would urge members of the public not to approach Craig Black."

The hunt for Black comes as police in Hertfordshire search for convicted murderer Ian John McLoughlin, 55, who is wanted in connection with the death of Graham Buck, 66.
