If you wanted to find out how to lose weight successfully, wouldn't you ask someone who's already been there and done that? That's exactly what experts from the National Weight Control Registry (NWCR) thought. As a result they've come up with seven things every dieter should do if they want to shed pounds - and keep the weight off.

The NWCR, based in the US, asked its 6,000-odd members about how they lost and are maintaining their weight (the average weight loss among participants was 30lbs). The report, published in Health & Fitness Journal, shows nearly all of the members lost weight by combining diet and exercise.

Be warned, however, if you're hoping for any quick-fix tips, as you could be disappointed.

The NWCR survey shows 54), and eat a low-fat diet (the average number of calories eaten per day by NWCR members is 1,380, with less than 30% of these calories coming from fat).

Eating breakfast to reduce the risk of overeating later in the day is another strategy, as is having strong willpower (NWCR members rarely eat too much, says the report). The final two tips are to always stick to your diet, even on holidays, weekends and special occasions, and weigh yourself regularly to keep track of your weight.
