Rupert Murdoch Apologises To Milly Dowler's Family After Phone Hacking Scandal

Rupert Murdoch Apologises To Milly Dowler's Family

PRESS ASSOCIATION -- Rupert Murdoch has met Milly Dowler's family as he stepped up efforts to stem the damage caused by the News of the World hacking into her mobile phone.

The media mogul held talks with the murdered schoolgirl's parents, Sally and Bob, and her sister Gemma in a London hotel as part of News International's campaign to defuse the scandal.

Police claims that Milly's phone had been hacked after her disappearance triggered a string of damaging revelations which led to the closure of the Sunday tabloid last week.

Mr Murdoch, who met relatives and family lawyer Mark Lewis at the five star One Aldwych hotel, in central London, was understood to have personally suggested the meeting.

The Dowlers - who found out about Milly being targeted shortly before her killer, Levi Bellfield, went on trial at the Old Bailey - were the first of a string of crime victims to have been exposed as targets of the paper.

The family have already held talks with the Prime Minister, Labour leader Ed Miliband and Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg this week.

Mr Murdoch emerged from the hotel to shouts of "shame on you" from a handful of protesters. Addressing reporters gathered outside, he said it was a private meeting and he had apologised.

It came as it was revealed Mr Murdoch will use adverts in national newspapers on Saturday to apologise for the News of the World's "serious wrongdoing".

The media tycoon will personally say he is "deeply sorry" for the hurt suffered by the people affected as he seeks to atone for the phone-hacking scandal.

Mr Murdoch says in the newspaper advert: "We are sorry. The News of the World was in the business of holding others to account. It failed when it came to itself."
