Serial Killers Get Incapacity Benefit: MPs Want To Know Why

MP Questions Why Serial Killers Can Receive Incapacity Beneift

The Government is reviewing whether serial killers detained under mental health legislation can receive incapacity benefit, employment minister Chris Grayling has said.

Mr Grayling described the payments as an "anomaly" after he was asked by Tory MP Jake Berry whether it was right the likes of Moors Murderer Ian Brady and the Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe were entitled to benefits.

In a question to Mr Grayling, the MP for Rossendale and Darwen, said: "Unlike prisoners, those detained under the Mental Health Act, including Ian Brady and Peter Sutcliffe, are entitled to receive incapacity benefit.

"Will you tell the House what this Government intends to do about it?"

Mr Grayling replied: "I agree with you that this is an anomaly and it is something that the department is reviewing as we speak and we will give more details in due course."
