At Least 28 Killed In Baghdad Mosque Bomb

At least 28 people are dead and 37 are wounded after a suicide bomber attacked a mosque in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad.

Local interior ministry officials said that on Sunday the attacker blew himself up inside a Sunni mosque during evening prayers.

The Associated Press reported that the Iraqi MP Khalid al-Fahdawi is among the dead. The interior ministry officials explained that al-Fahdawi was a parliamentarian allied with the Sunni-backed Iraqiya bloc.

The attack took place at Umm al-Qura mosque, Baghdad's largest Sunni mosque. The mosque is also the headquarters of the Sunni Endowment, which takes care of Sunni Muslim religious sites.

There has been a recent flurry of violence across Iraq, particularly over the holy period of Ramadan, which ends on Tuesday.

Over the weekend at least 13 people died in a series of attacks - in Basra, Falluja and Baghdad.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for Sunday's bombing.
