Margaret Moran To Face Charges Over Parliamentary Expenses Claims

MP Faces 21 Charges Over Expenses Claims

Former MP Margaret Moran is to face 21 charges in relation to claims she made for parliamentary expenses, the Director of Public Prosecutions has said.

"Having thoroughly reviewed the evidence gathered by the police, we have decided there is sufficient evidence and it is in the public interest to bring criminal charges against Margaret Moran," Keith Starmer said on Tuesday.

"These charges relate to fraudulent claims with a total value of more than £60,000."

The former Labour MP for Luton South has been summonsed to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates' Court on 19 September.

Starmer said the charges include 15 allegations of false accounting and six allegations of forgery.

A Labour Party spokesperson Moran had been suspended from membership of the Labour party.

Tuesday's decision by the DPP comes more than two years after revelations surrounding illegal claims by MPs came to light.

David Chaytor, Eric Illsley, Elliot Morley, Jim Devine, Lord Taylor of Warwick and Lord Hanningfield have been convicted and jailed over the scandal.

If found guilty Moran could face up to ten years in prison.
