Father Charged With Chatham Fire Murders

A man has been charged with the murder of his estranged wife and baby son who died in an alleged arson attack on their home.

Danai Muhammadi, a 23-year-old car salesman from Britannia Street, Coventry, West Midlands, is also charged with three counts of attempted murder following the blaze in Chatham, Kent, at around 2.30am on Saturday.

The victims who died were named locally as 20-year-old Melissa Crook and her 15-month-old son Noah.

Muhammadi is to appear at Medway Magistrates' Court on Wednesday morning.

Police are continuing to question two other suspects, a 35-year-old man from Maidstone and a 21-year-old woman from Coventry.

A fourth person, a 37-year-old man from Coventry, has been released on police bail until October 24 while inquiries continue.

Two men remain in hospital following the fire while a woman has been discharged, according to police.

The 49-year-old father and grandfather of the victims remains in a life-threatening condition in East Grinstead Hospital.

The 21-year-old brother and uncle of the victims is still being treated at Medway Maritime Hospital for serious injuries, and the 49-year-old mother and grandmother of those who died has been discharged from hospital after being treated for smoke inhalation.

A Kent Police spokeswoman said that investigations are continuing into the deaths.
