Catwalk Review: Christopher Kane Spring/Summer 2012

WHO?: Christopher Kane

IN A NUTSHELL: Of late the fashion industry has been so obsessed with the 60s hourglass it has forgotten about the decade's other iconic silhouette: the shift. After Kane's latest collection we suspect that oversight will be addressed. Shifts with origami-influenced details abound as did sportswear-inspired cuts and, brace yourself, comfortable flat shoes.

BEG, BORROW OR STEAL: Any of the shifts would make a timeless addition to your wardrobe, but the stone coloured version with the deep embellished v-neck was the real gem of the collection.

THE F-ROW: Packed full of heavy hitters like Kanye West, Sam Cam and Anna Wintour (you know you are a big deal when the bob arrives in time for your show).

VERDICT: Last season it seemed commercial appeal could not have been further from Christopher Kane's mind, but this season it appears to have crept to the forefront. The fabrics and detailing were every bit as cutting edge as we've come to expect, but this time around he will have more than just the hardcore fashionistas lusting after his pieces. That being said, it wouldn't be a Christopher Kane show if there wasn't something we didn't get. For S/S 2012 it was the middle movement of frocks that looked like they were made out of shower curtains and the embellished, orthopedic-style sandals we couldn't get our heads around. However, if there is one thing we have learned from Mr Kane over the years it is that he is almost always right. No doubt some day in the near future we will be cursing our own lack of vision and worshipping him for giving us fashionably blister-free feet.
