Tom Bender, Accrington Stanley Defender, Recovering After Horror Injury

Young Footballer Recovering After Head Injury

Accrington Stanley defender Tom Bender is recovering in hospital after being knocked unconscious during a game on Tuesday evening.

The 18-year-old Welshman suffered severe concussion after colliding with his own goalkeeper and had to be treated on the pitch for half an hour before it was safe to take him to Blackburn Hospital.

The incident happened during a Johnstone's Paint Trophy tie with Tranmere Rovers. The match was abandoned following Bender's injury.

"Both sets of players were shaken by the incident, hence why we took the decision to call the game off. It's only a natural reaction when you see a player stay down for so long," Accrington Stanley chief executive Rob Heys told BBC Sport.

In a statement issued on their website on Wednesday the club said they had been inundated with calls, Tweets and emails wishing Bender well.

"Accrington Stanley would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to get in touch about the condition of Tom Bender," it said.

"The defender suffered severe concussion, but is conscious and talking after being kept in hospital overnight for observation."
